Advanced Preaching Class – Lesson #13

Summary of what we have covered this quarter!

Introductory: Again, I want to commend each of you in this advanced preaching class. Each subsequent quarter classes are purposely prepared to be more difficult than were those proceeding.

This quarter just past we have had the class members share their experiences of involvement with the Central Iowa Missions.

Each of us were to bring sermons, articles, poems, prose, illustrations, and other such materials to share with the class.

Early this quarter we spent 3 class periods taking apart and analyzing the Sermon on the Mount to see what methods and skills Jesus used in His preaching.

We looked at the Apostle Paul’s Sermon on Mars Hill (To An Unknown God) – Acts 17:22-34.

In that we learned about his posture for preaching. We learned something of Paul’s style of preaching and some of the content that he included in his sermon.

We looked at the sermon of the Apostle Peter on the Day of Pentecost from Acts 2:14-41 and also at his sermon from Acts 3:22-36.

We also dissected Stephen’s sermon from Acts 7:2-8:1. We took note of his style and material presented for later in Acts we see the Apostle Paul using the same basic outline in his defense before several Roman government officials.

We spent a couple of weeks learning how to preach on Bible Characters and how to preach an overview of a whole book of the Bible.

Finally, we learned last week of the importance of preaching strong doctrine in our sermons, but also applying the principle of “speaking the truth in love” – Eph. 4:15.

As stated in the introduction. These classes are designed to become increasingly more difficult. In our next section, we will be doing “Textual Analysis in Advanced Preaching”. We will be looking at a few Koine Greek words as we try to find the true meaning behind various passages of the New Testament. This should give you a better understanding of particular Bible texts, as well as a greater appreciation for our books in the church library. If nothing else, you should come away with some good illustrations and stories from learning the meanings of some of the Greek words in the text. (You don’t have to know anything about Greek to take this class).

Again, I want to thank each of you who has participated in the Advanced Preaching Class and/or gone out to preach to area congregations as part of our Central Iowa Missions program. (CIM) Without your continued participation, this program would not be able to continue. You are all doing a great job! Keep up the good work! (I Cor. 15:58)
