It is a one-year enrichment program, based on a collaborative workshop approach in conjunction with the individual writing process, which focuses on the art of writing persuasively. It will speak to all of those strategies and techniques a writer uses to make a case or drive home a point, including voice, diction, purpose, thesis, patterns of development, research, organization, revision and rhetoric. The students will analyze predominantly non-fiction writing in terms of style, content and rhetoric, and will explore expository and analytical writing in a variety of modes and for a variety of purposes. Course participants will focus on displaying strong voice and style in their writing, responding to voice as listening writers, becoming critical readers, and applying revision and self-assessment to their own writing. This full year application course is to be taken in conjunction with the junior literature electives, and will earn the participant 1/2 an honors credit. This writing intensive workshop will prepare students for the Advanced Placement Language and Composition Examination which they will take in May of the school year.
