Advanced Expedition Medicine Course

As a minimum we recommend you bring:

You need to be prepared for sun, rain, wind and snow! The conditions are extremely changeable and we plan to outside everyday unless the weather poses a significant threat to your safety.

·  Hiking Boots – Preferably of waterproof material (Gore-Tex or alternative). The boots should be high on the ankle to give sufficient support and thermal protection.

·  Gaiters – Only if you already have them, it is not necessary but nice to bring them with you, good to have in snow conditions

·  Long sleeve shirt (thermal underwear) – Wool or synthetic.

·  Long Johns (thermal underwear) – Wool or synthetic.

·  Light wool sweater or fleece (2nd layer).

·  Trousers (2nd layer) – Strong and light material that dries quickly. Wind resistant and water repelling preferable.

·  Rain Jacket or an Anorak with hood – Waterproof and breathable material. Gore-Tex or equivalents are preferable.

·  Rain trousers – Waterproof and breathable material.

·  Liner Gloves – Wool or synthetic (polypropylene / polyester).

·  Mittens – Wool or synthetic (optionally waterproof) (two pairs if no liner gloves)

·  Socks – Wool or synthetic. One or two pairs for thermal and blister prevention.

·  Hat and a Balaclava – Wool or synthetic.

·  Slippers for the hut

·  Warm clothes (wool, synthetic, down) for nights at basecamp.

The average temperature this time of year is around 5°C, you may experience below freezing temperatures at night and see temperatures up to 15°C during the day. Wind chill could make temperatures feel significantly lower and you should be prepared for this.

Other gear:

·  Backpack: 45 - 60 litres (as we need to carry our food and sleeping bags for 2 days)

·  Sunglasses – Big enough to cover the eyes and with sufficient UV-protection.

·  Sun protection

·  Water bottle

·  Sleeping bag - NOTE: temperature may go down below 0°C at night (Possible to rent from Midgard Adventure for 1500 ISK per night). Mattresses and tents will be provided.

·  Personal medical / first aid kit

·  Luggage bag: preferably duffle bags which are easier to transport

Optional:

·  Toilet paper

·  Pocket knife

·  Plastic bags to keep your things dry

·  Needle and thread

·  Ear plugs and sleeping eye mask (bear in mind it will be

·  Hiking poles (strongly recommended)

·  Camera, spare batteries and a memory card or films.
