Introduction

Welcome to out training brochure for 2016/17. There are a range of courses to support staff working in Adult Social Care which have been identified through the service. More courses will be offered later on in the year. We’ve also included information on events and conferences that will take place over the coming months.

There are new procedures for booking on to training this year which are highlighted in ‘How to apply’ and we will visiting LBN teams once we go live.

How to apply?

LBN applicants

Courses from the 1July 2016 will be available on the 1Oracle learner homepage.

External applicants will need to apply using the application form found at the end of the brochure.

Course cancellation policy

Please be advised that, although the courses are free, a cancellation charge applies.

Cancellations must be received at least 10 working days prior to delivery date. If you do not attend, or fail to attend the complete course, your team/organisation will be charged to cover our costs - £100 for a full day or £50 for a half-day course.

Delegates will not be admitted if they arrive 15 minutes or more late; the cancellation charge will apply in these circumstances.

Please note that you may substitute delegates up to the day before the course.

Which course should I apply for?

All staff should have a development plan, which is usually discussed during your appraisal and supervision sessions with your line manager. This training brochure will assist you and your manager in identifying the appropriate course to meet your development needs.

What happens after the course?

After the course you will be given a CPD form, which you should take back to work to assist you with putting your learning into practice. You can also take the form into your supervision meetings so that you and your manager can discuss your learning and how it can be applied into your work.

You should keep the form, as this will be useful for professional registration purposes and evidencing.

Please note that certificates are only issued when delegates have satisfactorily completed assessed work/undertaken exams linked to national Awarding bodies

Your manager should also retain copies of your development plans to assist in analysing future training and learning needs and the details should be used in your appraisal and six-monthly review.

Safeguarding Adults Training Programme


Good Practice in Safeguarding Adults

The Newham Perspective

This course is mandatory for all new workers within Adult Social Care organisations.

This revised course reflects the National Competence Framework for Safeguarding Adults. It also provides essential knowledge required for Standard 10 of The Care Certificate.

Suitable for: All multi agency staff including GPs, Team Managers, Social Workers, Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Community and residential workers. The course is open to local council and health agencies, the emergency services and all private, voluntary and independent sector organisations working with Newham residents. It is also open to personal assistants and individual employers.

Course Aims: The course will give participants an overview of what abuse is, how workers can contribute to safeguarding adults and how all workers need to work within the London Borough of Newham Multi Agency Policies and Procedure & Pan London Procedures that guide good practice.

Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to:

·  Understand what safeguarding is and their role in safeguarding adults

·  Recognise an adult potentially in need of safeguarding and take action

·  Understand the procedures for reporting a concern

·  Understand dignity and respect when working with individuals

Prerequisites/preparation: Workers need to be familiar with their own organisation’s policies and procedures.

This course provides knowledge for: This event will provide knowledge for a range of qualifications and is essential for staff completing The Care Certificate or social care qualifications.

Safeguarding Adults: The role of the Manager in Provider Organisations

Suitable for: This course is targeted at managers and senior staff of provider organisations.

Course Aims: This course will support senior staff and managers of provider organisations to consider their roles in leading their organisations when a safeguarding investigation is taking place relating to their customers.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course participants will be able to:

·  Consider their role in leading the organisation through the consistent demonstration of good practice

·  Explain their role and the role of others, including their customers and staff team, in ensuring that an investigation is carried out effectively to required timescales and processes

·  Consider good practice in the investigation of complaints and allegations of abuse at a local level

·  Explain how to keep vulnerable adults safe, ensure their rights are upheld and choices respected, taking into account mental capacity and best interest and how they will ensure that their staff demonstrate good practice at all times

·  Discuss how to ensure that staff are knowledgeable and skilled in carrying out their work and are confident to challenge poor practice

·  Present reports that are concise, objective and consistent with local requirements

·  Consider how to manage and lead the organisation when difficult situations occur.

Prerequisites/preparation: All delegates should have previously attended safeguarding awareness and investigation training and should be familiar with the Pan London Safeguarding Adults Procedures and local arrangements prior to attending the course.

This course provides knowledge for: This course provides an opportunity for workers to demonstrate their competence against the National Competence Framework for Safeguarding Adults – Competence in working with people and delivering safeguarding services.

Standard 6: Demonstrates skills & knowledge to contribute effectively to the Safeguarding Process

Standard 7: Awareness & application of a range of local & national policy and procedural frameworks when undertaking Safeguarding activity

Standard 8: Ensure service users/carers are supported appropriately to understand Safeguarding issues to maximise their decision-making

Standard 9: Understand how best evidence is achieved

Standard 10: Understand when to use emergency systems to safeguard adults

Standard 11: Maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date records

Standard 12: Demonstrate required level of skills and knowledge to undertake a Safeguarding Adults investigation.

In addition the most senior staff attending may be able to meet the national competences 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19 & 20.

Places available: 20 per session. Places will be limited to no more than 2 per workplace/team.


Safeguarding Adults

Completing an Effective Enquiry - 2 days

Suitable for: This course is targeted at all staff that may need to take a lead role in coordinating an enquiry into allegations of abuse. It is open to experienced practitioners in Health Services, Adult Social Care, local health services or local provider organisations. This will include social workers, senior practitioners, team managers, experienced health practitioners and senior staff and managers in all settings.

Course Aims: This highly interactive course will support workers to plan and carry out enquiries into the safeguarding of vulnerable adults to nationally recognised standards of good practice and in adherence to local requirements and processes.

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the course participants will be able to:

·  Explain the purpose of undertaking a safeguarding enquiry and the factors that need to be considered, including when to notify and/or involve the police

·  Understand their role and the role of others (including vulnerable adults, police, advocates and IMCAs) in ensuring that a multi agency enquiry is carried out effectively to required timescales and processes

·  Explain how to keep vulnerable adults safe, ensure their rights are upheld and choices respected, taking into account mental capacity and best interest

·  List key factors to consider in achieving best evidence including good practice in interviewing

·  Develop strategies to minimise risk for the vulnerable adult, perpetrator, staff or organisations

·  Explain the potential impact of abuse on vulnerable adults and their informal carers, on staff and organisations

·  Consider ways of supporting victims of abuse and their carers through the process of an enquiry, including working proactively with those who are resistant, or refuse to engage with services.

·  Explain the relevant legislation and guidance which underpins good working practice in safeguarding adults

·  Present reports that are concise, objective and consistent with local requirements

·  Explain and demonstrate good practice in relation to chairing strategy meetings or case conferences.

Prerequisites/preparation: Workers applying for this course need to have a good understanding of recognising, responding to and reporting abuse as well as working knowledge of those groups of people defined as at risk of abuse. It is expected that all participants will have previously attended training at an introductory level. All applicants should familiarise themselves with the Pan London Safeguarding Adults Procedures and local arrangements prior to attending the course.

Managing Safeguarding Adults Meetings

Suitable for: For senior practitioners, social work team managers and senior operational managers.

Course Aims: This course will support senior staff to chair and manage meetings related to the safeguarding adult process. These may include strategy meetings, case conferences and other related meetings.
