Thecollege believes thatthe primaryresponsibilityoffacultyis to provideinstructionwhich willenhance student learning,and the primaryresponsibilityofeachsupervisor is toprovideanatmospherethat encouragesinstructionalexcellence andprofessionalgrowth.
Gateway prides itself on the qualityandstrength of its adjunct facultyteam. In order tomaintain this excellence,and to foster collaboration amongadjunctfaculty,full-timefaculty,andsupervisors, the collegefollows aninstructionalobservationand evaluation process developed bythe Connecticut CommunityCollege system’sLabor-ManagementCommittee.Thisprocessconsists of anobjective evaluation of instructionalperformance that is accomplished bygatheringand analyzing datafrom the instructor,students and supervisors.
For adjunct faculty, thecenterpiece of thisprocessis a ClassroomInstructionalObservation.Thepurposes areto:
1.Establish an evaluativeprocess for facultywhichpromotesgoalsetting,identifiesareasofstrength, recognizes and acknowledges superior performance andidentifiesareas that need improvement.
2.To providean information base that will help supervisors work collaborativelywithindividual facultymembers to improve their performance.
3.To form the basis of fairandreasonablepersonneldecisions in accordancewith theCollective Bargaining Agreements.
Instructional ObservationProcess
Theinstructionalobservationprocess consists of a pre-conference, the direct observation ofthefacultymember’s instruction,and a post-conference.Instructional observation items mayvarydependingupon the typeof teachingsetting(classroom,online class,clinical,laboratory, studio,or ESL).
Step 1: Scheduling
Priorto the pre-conference, the evaluator andfacultymemberwillagreeondatesandtimes to conduct the Pre-Conference andInstructionalObservation. Typically, these aredonethe sameday,with the Pre-Conference held just before theInstructionalObservation.
Priorto the Pre-Conference,the facultymemberwill submit to the evaluator a currentcoursesyllabus/overviewforthe class to beobserved. Thecoursesyllabus/overviewwill
contain the focus of thecourse’s instructionalobjectivesandexpected outcomes. Thefacultymemberwill also be asked to completea Pre-Observation Form whichsummarizes the objectives of the particularlessonthat the supervisor will be observing.
Step 2: Pre-Conference
Duringthe pre-conference, the facultymember and evaluator willreview thesyllabus/overviewandPre-ObservationForm. Typically,theywilldiscuss:in general, the overallprocess of the evaluation, the teaching approaches usedin othercoursescompared to the courseto be observedin particular, the instructional objective(s) forthe instructional session to beobserved,and the strategies used to accomplish the objective(s)
Step 3: InstructionalObservation
Duringthe observation, the evaluatorwill takenotes to use as the basis foransweringthequestionslisted on the appropriate form (classroom,clinical,laboratory, studio or ESL).For an on-groundclass, the evaluator isexpected to spendatleast 50 minutes observing.For an onlineclass, the facultymemberandevaluator typicallymeet together to review aminimum of oneunit of coursework, which should containitemssuchasinstructionalmaterialspreparedbythefacultymember,andelectronic discussions amongfacultyandstudents that mimic classroominteractions.
Step 4: Post-Conference
Theevaluator will hold a post-conference with thefacultymember.For thisconference,the evaluator will use the summarynarrativeto discussareas of strengthand to providesuggestions forimprovement. Theevaluator will also reviewcommentsmade on theOverallPerformance Form for AdjunctFaculty, which mayinclude anyspecial serviceconductedbythe facultymemberand/or data fromstudent instructional evaluationsurveysconducted everysemester.
Once the forms arediscussed, reviewed,and signed, the evaluator will provide thefacultymemberwithcopies.The originals will besent to the Dean ofAcademicStudentAffairs, who uponfinalreview, will submit them to the HumanResourcesOfficeforinclusion in thefacultymember’sfile.
