The training is designed for Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychiatrists, Nurses, Psychologists, Nurse Practitioners and anyone providing services to or involved with Older Adult clients. The topics and contents related to this event are necessary to make providers aware of and sensitive to the unique issues surrounding the provision of health, mental and substance abuse treatment. There are many cultural groups for whom there have been significant disparities in access to care. This training will review findings from recent research and examine cultural perspectives that can impact the willingness of Older Adults to seek out and accept treatment. Providers and DMH staff will be equipped with new skills to effectively outreach and engage in treatment of Older Adults from Latino, African American, Asian-Pacific Islander (API), LGBTQ and Middle Eastern communities. This training will assist professionals to obtain and communicate needed resources to Older Adults, while effectively coordinating and developing integrated service plans.

TARGET AUDIENCE: DMH Clinicians and MH Providers

OBJECTIVES: / As a result of attending this training, participants should be able to:
  1. Discuss barriers for APIOlder Adults with both medical and behavior health needs in accessing and utilizing services.
  2. Identify opportunities to increase outreach and engagement of African American Older Adults into care.
  3. Identify changes in healthcare and its effects on the aging HIV/AIDS population.
  4. Identify how discrimination acts as a barrier to healthcare and well-being on LGBTQ Older Adult Populations.
  5. Describe and illustrate a model of provider behavior that emphasizes cultural competence in Latino Older Adult communities.
  6. Describe cultural factors which may impact treatment of Older Adult Middle Eastern communities.
  7. Identify changes in healthcare and its effects on the aging HIV/AIDS population.
