Sailing Experience

2013: From 19th December-12 to 04th April-13 I sailed in a Cape size bulk Carrier(MV Choulex)of Swiss Marine as chief Engineer. The machinery space is fitted with B&W SMC Engine developing 16500BHP @ 80 RPM and UMS operation.

2012: From 10th March to 15th May-12 I sailed in a handymax Bulk Carrier(ID Tide) of ID Wallem, Honkong as Chief Engineer. The machinery space is fitted with B&W SMC engine developing 12000HP @ 120rpm.

2011: From 10th Feb to 12th April-11 I sailed in a panama Bulk Carrier(MV U.Sea Paguera) of Harren and PartnerShip managementCo, Germany as Chief Engineer. The machinery space is fitted with B&W LMC engine developing 11500HP

From 2nd Aug to 7th Nov-11 I sailed in a Handymax Bulk Carrier(MV Atlantic) of Rod Ship management of Iran as Chief Engineer. The Machinery space is fitted with B&W SMC Engine developing 12700HP

2010:From 29th April to 8th Sept-10 I sailed in a Panamax Bulk carrier(M.V.Paiute) of Harren and Partner Shipmangement co Ltd,Bremen,Germany as Chief Engineer. The machinery space is fitted with Sulzer 7RTA Engine developing 11000 H.P

2009:From 27th June to 15th Aug-09 I sailed in a Handymax Bulk carrier (M.V.Tamilnadu) of Shipping Corporation of Indiaas Chief Engineer. The machinery space is fitted with B&W LMC developing 11600 H.P.

From 30th August 2008 to 5th Feb-09 I took over a Handymax Bulk carrier (Jag Riddhi) of GESCO as a Chief Engineer. The machinery space is fitted with Mitsubishi 6UEC50LS main engine developing 11000HP also fitted with composite AAlborg Sun rod oil fired Boiler of 7K.

2008:: From 7th May to 27th June 2008 I took over an assignment as Chief Engineer with Barnard Shulte to reactivate the machinery space of aVLCC (Pacific Ruby) which was under conversion @ Chinese yard to VLOC.The machinery space is fitted with B&W LMC series engine developing 30,000HP.Also fitted with 16K water tube Boiler and turbo generator and turbo pumps. After nine months of conversion the plant was put into operation and handed them over @Singapore.

2007:From 30th April to 30th June 2007 I took an assignment with ETA Dubai to take over a Panamax-size geared bulk carrier MV Meena from its previous Greek owner at Philippines. I successfully negotiated all the technical parameters and handed over the ship to the present owner. The ship is fitted with a 6-cylinder B&W GFC series developing 16,000 horsepower including a steam turbine generator and 4 other diesel generators.

2006: During November and December 2006 I was Chief Engineer on Svitzer at Surat of Viz Moller Hazra Pvt. Ltd. which is a part of the A.P. Moller Maersk Group. This is a LNG berthing operation of 65 tonne bollard pull tug.

2005:Joined Belgium firm, Dredging International for a period of 45 days as Chief Engineer in one of their trailing suction hopper dredgers of 7751 GRT, ‘Pacifique’. Her main propulsion was by a twin Deutz engine SVB12M640 developing 9710KW @ 600rpm fitted to two CP Propellers. The power generation was through a 2 X 3180 KVA, 660V AC 50 Hz. The dredge pump shaft power was 1735KW @ 174rpm.

My next assignment was for 152 days (ended 14th June 2005) as Chief Engineer of a Panamax-size bulk carrier (Pacific Pioneer) of 225-meter length, gross tonnage of 40172 MT, 2001 built of UMS class. The carrier was powered by Hyundai-B&W 5S60MC-diesel engine developing 11670 bhp @ 86rpm. The bridge control was fully automatic and fitted with 3 B&W generators of 520 KW each. The ship is compliant with the latest SOLAS and MARPOL regulations.

From 15th August 2005 till 10th November 2005 I was Chief Engineer for a reputed Indian dredging company in a trailing suction dredger whose pump capacity was 11,000 metric cubes/hour.

2004:Resumed sailing after voluntary retirement from my previous job at D.G. Shipping to gain operation experience. This necessitated obtaining a few mandatory courses and certificates viz.

  • Refreshers and updating for the AFF course: MTI, issued on 27th February 2004, Mumbai
  • PSCRB course: MMTI, issued on 21s February 2004, Mumbai
  • Medical First Aid Course: MMTI, issued on 26th February 2004, Mumbai
  • PSSR Course: MMTI, issue don 3rd March 2004, Mumbai
  • Specialized Liquefied Gas Course: LBS College, 20th December 2002

On completion of the above, I joined an Indian-flag ship (bulk carrier) on 13th march 2004 as the Chief Engineer. During my tenure I helped the ship prepare for the ISPS code requirement on board, successfully completed the audit and recommended it for the certificate. I have also carried out the Auxiliary Boiler Survey successfully.

The ship had a B&W KGF Engine of 11300 HP and I was on board for 40 days before the vessel’s management changed and I had to sign off.

During my charge, I advised the Master on the PSC Inspection requirements before arrival at the ports and successfully passed the inspections without any major deficiencies although the ship was 26 years old. I also took an interest in guiding the new engineers through many technical and operational nuances. In short, my short tenure proved to be an extremely fruitful one, for me as well as for the ship.

1982 – 2004: Employment Ashore with Mercantile Marine Department and Directorate General of Shipping:

1999-2002:Returned to the Directorate General of Shipping. Was appointed Leader of Indian Delegation at 44th, 45th, 46th, 47th & 48th sessions of MEPC at IMO, Londonas well as in the Diplomatic Conference on OPRC-HNS Protocol at IMO, London. Initiated active agenda papers on ship recycling, ballast water and many other important issues.

Was also involved in the implementation of ISM Code for Indian Flag vessels.

Appointed as a Country Focal Point (India) on UNDP-sponsored GLOBAL BALLAST WATER PROJECT funded by Global Environmental Facility (GEF) worth 0.67 million USD. Six pilot countries including India, China, Brazil, South Africa, Iran and Ukraine are involved in this project.

In addition to the above, during this period I have also attended the following meetings:-

  1. Attended bi-annual first International Water Conference at Budapest, Hungaryorganized by UNDP & GEF.
  2. Attended the First International Ballast water Conference at Singapore organized by ETI Singapore.
  3. Attended a regional workshop on the MARPOL Convention at Colombo organized by IMO.
  4. Attended ISM seminar in Bangladesh organized by IMO.
  5. Attended 4th Global task Force Meeting of GLOBAL BALLAST WATER PROJECT at Beijing, China

I was appointed as a memberof a high-powered Investigative Committee under the aegis of Supreme Court order on illegal import of hazardous material in India. Committee had submitted their report within the stipulated time as directed by Supreme Court. I also attended Advanced Gas Course at LBS College, Mumbai.

I was chosen as a member of the Syllabus Committee for Marine Engineering graduates at MumbaiUniversity. I have also been a visiting lecturer for the Chief Engineer’s Up gradation Course at Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) College, Mumbai.

1997:Was appointed as Principal Officer in- charge of Mercantile Marine Department. Conducted (and completed in 2 months) the inquiry into the causes of the sinking of Indian Flagship M.V. Arcadia Pride, which caused the death of 32 seafarers. Upgraded and refurbished the MMD Examination Centre under the revised STCW Convention. Wrote the office Quality Manual detailing effective changes in the MMD after my succession which included, rapid file movement, in-house surveyor training, increased Port State Control inspection, increased revenue earning and growing computer awareness among staff members. Nominated as a Delegate to attend London Dumping Convention organized by IMO as well as a conference by the ILO (in India). Attended Industrial Audit Certification Course atTNO. Member of Board of Trustees at the JawaharlalNehruPort Trust (JNPT) till 1999

1995:Led the Engine Room Full Mission Simulator Project to be built in Japan. Negotiated for Engine Combustion Simulator Software and conducted entire project design, scrutiny and stage inspection (in Japan). Presently the simulator is in full operation and providing immense benefit to students in the LBS College. Attended Advanced Firefighting Course at TS Rahman.

1994:Attended a 21- day course on Administrative Management at Mysore conducted by faculty of Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore.

1987:Selected by International Maritime Organization for a Fellowship to undergo a 3-month on the job marine surveyor’s training in Australia

1982:Joined Mercantile Marine Department as Engineer and Ship Surveyor. Duties included ship registration and survey; plan approval, design scrutiny, inspection of marine auxiliary machinery, conducting examinations and marine casualty inspections etc. Attended Advanced Tanker Safety Courseat LBS College, Mumbai.

1981:Successfully passed the examination and joined M/s Keppel Ship Management (Singapore) on a bulk carrier as Chief Engineer

1979:Took admission in South Shields Marine and Technical College, UK to pursue the ExtraFirst Class Examination.

1978:Joined M/s Ocean Tramps (Hong Kong) as Chief Engineer

1977:Joined M/s Gulf east Ship Management (Hong Kong) as 2nd Engineer and was subsequently promoted to Chief Engineer

1976:Completed First Class Certificate and joined M/s Barber Ship Management (Hong Kong) as 2nd Engineer

1975. Thereafter resigned.

1972:Promoted to 2nd Engineer and later served in a cargo ship till 1975.

1971:Joined a bulk carrier in Japanas 3rd Engineer
