Activity Title:Shadow an Ag Ed Student for the day!

Materials Needed:

  • Contact your nearest Ag Ed college/university for a list of students who might be willing to host a student. Try to connect with a student who does plan to teach after graduating.

Description:

Have an Ag Ed major from a University/college host an interested and have them discuss the program and their experiences. Use the outline below for the person being shadowed to follow. Send the outline to the Ag Ed student ahead of time so they may prepare the answers. Prior to your student participating in the shadow have them create a list of questions they would like to ask the person they will be shadowing.

Time:

  • Require they shadow the student for at least 2-3 hours, include a campus tour, sit in on a class, and meet the Ag Education faculty and other department members.

Anticipated AgEd Outcome:

  • Showcase University/College Ag Ed programs
  • Become familiar with an Ag Ed Program
  • Awareness of Ag Education degrees
  • Meet a future colleague

Sample Outline of Questions for Shadowing an Ag Education Student

  2. Year in School
  3. Size of School/Location
  4. Number of students in the Ag Education major (freshman through senior)
  5. Why did you decide to major in Ag Education?
  6. What are your career goals?
  7. Were you in a high school Ag Education program? If so, where and for how long?
  8. What is your favorite college class?
  9. What is the most surprising thing about college?
  10. Describe the typical classes that an Ag Education major might take in college?
  11. What are you most looking forward to about being an Ag Teacher?
  12. What advice would you give to someone thinking about becoming an Ag Teacher?
  13. Do you have any special stories or memorable moments from your high school ag program or from your own college teaching experiences?
  14. Please share some other general information about your college/university. (Number of total students enrolled, teacher/student ratio, clubs/organizations, sports, etc.)
  15. Share information specific about the Ag Education major. Number of credits, when you typically start going out into classrooms teaching, length of the student teaching experience, other items unique to your Ag Education degree.
