Activity 1.4 – Technology Concept Mapping

Purpose

Being able to capture your thinking is not always an easy thing to do. One way to record your understanding of something is to write out notes. Another way is to make a list of ideas or concepts that you have learned. A third way is to draw pictures that help you remember what you are learning. Making a concept map involves doing all three of these to get a picture of what you are learning about an idea.

The Technology Concept Mapping Activity is designed to provide you with an opportunity to explain, interpret, and provide your perspective of the similarities of and differences between Technology and Science you discovered during Activity 1.3Technology MiniQuest. A concept map is a method of linking related ideas graphically, through pictures and phrases that mean something to you. Making a concept map helps you develop a fuller understanding of a topic.

Individually, you will develop a concept map that depicts what your understanding of the two fields of technology and science is, what you learned about the various artifacts, and what your overall understanding is of how technology impacts society. You will then form into a team, through discussion and consensus; the teamwill create a concept map that represents the team’s thinking. The team concept maps will be presented to the class and a question/answer session and discussion will follow to help you make sure your concept map shows what you wanted it to show.

Equipment

  • Individual-and team- concept map handout for your personal use; the team will need a copy for the development of a team concept map.
  • (Optional) Overhead projector or document camera and projector
  • (Optional) Transparency pens, enough for one per team
  • (Optional) Transparencies, enough for one per team and one for the class

Procedure

Following your introduction to concept maps and your viewing of the PowerPoint® presentation, you will create an individual concept map to represent your comprehension of the (1) similarities of and differencesbetween technology and science and (2) of the technological developments you discovered during Activity 1.3A Technology MiniQuest. You will develop your concept map by drawing geometric shapes, pictures, or other graphics and linking them with sentences that describe their connections. Your map will illustrate how Technology and Science are similar and different. And, your map will illustrate how the development of various technologies has impacted society. You will have 30 minutes to develop your concept map.

As you develop your individual concept map, sort your main ideas and concepts with these questions:

  • What is technology? What is science?
  • How aretechnology and science similar and how are they different?
  • What are examples of technology?
  • In what ways has the use of technology impacted society in a positive and in a negative way?
  • What are the major areas of technology, and what is an example of each?

After you complete your Individual Concept Map, you will meet with your team members and discuss each team member’s concept map. You will compare and contrast each member’s map. The goal is to develop a consensus that addresses the above questions. If the individual maps agree, then the team will select the best one to represent the team concept map. If the individual maps do not represent the same information, your team will need to discuss the differences and come to a consensus on developing a Team Concept Map. Your teacher may have your team prepare your Team Concept Map using a transparency sheet and transparency pens and have you share your map with the remainder of the class.

Evaluation

Your concept map will be evaluated using a rubric to check the content and the appropriate connections to help the information flow in a logical manner.

Conclusion

  1. What distinguishes Technology and Science?
  1. Identify one or two technological developments thatyou think are important to know and that help you understand technology.
