Action items PoDAG XXIV

November 23, 2005

Carryover from Past meetings:

1. Metrics:

Data Usage and Metrics must be continued.Establish a base of defensible statistics on the users of the Data Center and on data products. Collect, interpret and make available metrics information. Extend the record backwards in time. Explain the context of the metrics. Collect, interpret and make available metrics information. Establish a base of defensible statistics on the use of the Data Center and on data products. The UWG was presented with interesting a diversity of numbers in both the Highlights and Moses presentations. , nNow these need to evaluated and consolidated by NSIDC.

2. Website:

Continually refresh data and documentation and make improvements to the website. The web is a key conduit between NSIDC and users and NSIDC needs to stay on top of technology changes in web strategies. The new sea ice addition to the Sstate of the Ccryophere is a welcomed addition. Other public interest sections nows need to be updated too. We, especially want to see a the section on the climate aspects of the cryosphere. This should be rather straightforward since Serreze and Barry have just published a new textbook on this topic.

The iIn addition information collected byfrom the POINT survey should be used to improve the website. NSIDC should provide a rough schedule for site improvements that respond to the POINT survey results.

3. Decadal survey (formerly Roadmaps):

NSIDC should continue to monitorparticipate in this endeavor and report back when necessary to the UWG.

4. Booths at professional meetings:

NSIDC should continue to have a presence at national meetings. The emphasis should continue to be advertising the data center and products, however, NSIDC should also use these face to face encounters with users to collect be collecting information about their data sets, including access, ease of use, quality etc.. This is especially important for the Fall AGU, as such results could be used as partbecause of the Product Review scheduled for January 2006. that will be taking place in January.

5. Workshop:

A workshop should be organized for the following fall 2006. The workshop should be held in Boulder in conjunction with the next PoDAG meeting. The topic for the workshop should reinforce data assimilation in models and development of Climate Data Records. Specific data areas might include PM TB, sea ice, snow cover. The workshop should have a way to show assess the benefit of the workshop /achievements. The UWG suggests NSIDC invite representatives from other DAACS as appropriate. The topic for the workshop should be in line the of data assimilation and data products. Topics might include PM TB, sea ice, snow cover.

6.  6. Membership

We would like to recommend that Waleed Abdalati be put on the UWG as a member and that an offer would be extended to John Bates or someone from NOAA.

7. 7. Next Meeting

To follow the workshop next fall (October 2006) . We suggest NSIDC investigate holding the succeeding meeting jointly withMake offer to others DAACs and their UWGs for either PO.DAAC or LP.DAAC to participate with the workshop and attend the meeting. Thise following meeting would be held in spring 2007.

(spring 2007) could be in conjunction with PO-DAAC,LP-DAAC

New action items -24

18. NPP/NPOESS

The UWG is still very concerned with the directions of NPP/NPOESS. We believe the DAAC should be proactive and seek out a role in management of cryospheric data from these satellites.

The presentation by John Bates was informative and the interactions between the UWG and John were helpful to visualize the concepts of “research to operations” and the creation of CDRs, through maturity metrics. Therefore, NSIDC should Attempt to apply John’s maturity model a data set. This effort would inform NSIDC about the process and provide John valuable feedback about real world application of the maturity model

The maturity metrics would also be useful for the building of CDRs and for better understanding of future data resource requirements needed for Long Term Archival of data. Metrics information could also be used for the upcoming NASA Data Product Review.

9. NASA Data Product Review

The UWG has a very strong interest in the Data Product Review. The UWG hopes to have members in attendance at the review or at least consulted regarding review outcomes. The DAAC must be proactive and consider preparation for this review a high priority.

102. Albedo products

No action will be taken by the UWG at this time. If advise is needed, a telecom will be instituted on this issue.

113. Movie on the Cryosphere

Would like to recognize the efforts ofeffects made by NSIDC staff in the production of the movie. Would also like to acknowledge in advance the effects that will be made to get the movie in the hands of the UWG and others in the field. We would also like toalso recommend that when future opportunities like this arise that NSIDC participate. For example, animations of in the future that the appropriate individuals also work on the creation of new movies like snowcover, ice sheets, glaciers, permafrost, etc..
