Introduction - Introductions were made, including the new co-chairs Dawn Boody and Deb Roof.

Demonstration – A demonstration was provided by Michael Rice from Messiah on Snagit software. A discussion followed on possible uses of this software related to circulation, including student training. It was suggested that before recording a video to have a written script to make recording smoother. Videos can be embedded in Moodle, BlackBoard or other course management programs.

Shelving – Discussed software programs used to train student workers to shelve correctly. Dewey Easy and LC Easy were mentioned. Albright uses color coded tags to check accuracy. Each student worker is assigned colored tags, which are inserted in books when shelved. Another student worker then checks to see if shelving was done accurately and pulls the tags.

Student Workers – Hiring processes were discussed. The application process was mentioned as well as the amount of extracurricular activities a student is involved in and previous work experience. Most just go with a gut feeling. Some feel if a student is busy or has extracurricular activities, they might have better time management skills. But most of all – availability is key. Evaluation forms were mentioned as a way to monitor student workers progress. And, it was asked if anyone has fired a student worker. Most institutions have a 3 strikes and you’re out policy. Kutztown has a contract that students sign when hired with the understanding that they won’t be hired back if they break the contract.

Scheduling – Some libraries only have staff available until 10pm. After that, student workers close the building at midnight. Most do not have any staff working on Saturdays. A special ‘Snow Day’ schedule can be used in the event of bad weather. There is an Inclement Supervisor that puts the Snow Day schedule in effect. Students are notified and those that are on this special schedule know to come in to work.

Substitutions - Discussed methods used for students to request substitutions at each institution. Methods included using Moodle for communication and requesting subs, as well as e-mail, a Wiki and Cozi Calendar.
