Accommodation Notes, Christ Church

The following notes are to inform and reassure you about the arrangements we have in place for your visit.

Please do read them carefully.

Security

With so many new faces about during the interviews, the porters cannot possibly check that everyone wandering about the College is supposed to be here, so the following simple precautions will help ensure your own security and that of others:

  • Lock your room at all times, even when you are in it;
  • Do not leave your possessions unattended, even for a moment;
  • Oxford is no more dangerous than other large town but you are advised not to go out alone after dark and in any case to keep to streets that are well-lit.

Your room

  • There should be internet access is available and the Porters’ Lodge will have details;
  • All rooms have wash basins. Beds will be made up with towels and soap provided also;
  • Your room is someone else’s home for much of the year. Please respect this and any possessions that may be left behind;
  • Alcohol is strictly prohibited;
  • Please note that whilst the college has a duty of care we are not in loco parentis for you during your stay here;
  • We regret that due to pressure of space there is no accommodation for parents;
  • Only the person to whom a room has been allocated may spend the night there. We need to be able to account for everyone in an emergency.

Evenings

  • A word like “curfew” might sound a little as though we are treating you all like children rather than adults. However, it’s because we have a duty of care to you during the period of your stay here that we must ensure you are safely back in college by a sensible time. Naturally, you are already sensible enough to avoid the risks of late-night drinking etc in a busy city (not to mention the probable effects on your performances and chances in your interviews);
  • There will be evening activities and plenty of undergraduates to talk to in the JCR, but if you do go out in the evening, you will be expected to be back by 10.00pm, and the main gates will be locked
  • Do please be aware that the college curfew will be enforced.

Contact details whilst in Oxford

  • When you arrive please make sure the JCR undergraduate helpers have you mobile phone number and keep it switched on. We may need to contact you to notify you of another interview at short notice.

Dietary requirements

  • If you notified us of special requirements or restrictions, an appropriate diet card will be included with your room key. Please put this in front of you at served meals and show it to the Hall staff at self-service meals.

Departure

  • Rooms must be vacated by 9.30 am on the day of departure. Please sign out at the Porter’s Lodge and leave your key. There will be a place for you to store your bag until your departure from college;
  • You may be able to leave Oxford before the time stated in the email inviting you for interview. But please do not go until we have put up a notice in the JCR making it clear that you are free to leave Oxford;
  • You are expected to leave Oxford at the earliest opportunity. We would expect that most people who are advised they may leave before 4.00pm will be able to get home. If that is not possible, you may of course stay another night;
  • Please notify us by email only () if your postal/email address has changed from the one you put on your UCAS form as we will use this to email you in January to tell you the outcome of your interviews. UCAS ‘track’ will also be updated in due course. Please do not telephone unless in an emergency.

Finally…

Many people in Christ Church are working hard to ensure that your stay is as enjoyable and relaxing as possible. Please do let the Admissions Office know if any of our arrangements have broken down so that we may sort things out for you and possibly for those coming after you.
