  • To keep desk area and floor clean for the next class
  • Electronics: No iPad usage (unless approved by the instructor first), or other electronic devices such as mp3players, iPods, music earphones, cellphones, etc. No ear phones allowed in ears.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Please give credit to those who deserve it. Do not claim a piece of art as yours unless you did it! Do not draw for someone else. Do not copy someone else’s art work. That is not original. Do not take art that is not yours.

ATTENDANCE: I encourage regular and consistent class attendance in art. I understand students get sick, have medical appointments and family emergencies. Missing an art lesson is difficult to make up because we are mostly “hands on.” As stated above, participation and effort is part of the grading rubric for art. If a student is not in attendance, they are missing out on that classroom instruction and not participating. It is also not fair to the students who have good attendance. A student’s final grade is affected by absences, and will include a deduction of points from that art project/assignment. Whether or not the students’ absences are excused, automatic point deduction for absences are as follows: any absences over 3 days will result in 5% of the participation grade deducted for that specific project per day missed.Points awarded in the classroom participation category could add up to one quarter (25%) of the overall grade for this class. Please make an effort to have good attendance in art class.

BELLWORK: Every day upon entering class, students are expected to do their Bellwork. Bellwork consists of an art or related vocabulary term that they must copy down in their drawing notebook. Following, we will have a discussion about it. Other forms of Bellwork we will be doing are free sketch drawings. I will place an object in front of the students or give them a subject to free sketch in their notebook. Bellwork is a very important part of this art course and is an important part of their grade in art. Not doing Bellwork results in a deduction of points which will lower the students’ art grade significantly.

CELL PHONES: As stated in the Student Handbook, “Classroom usage of electronics may be determined by the individual instructors.” My art classroom rules regarding cellphones include: All students will relinquish their cell phones at the beginning of the class and place them in a cell phone holder provided. Students will be allowed to pick them up at the end of class. Refusal to relinquish cell phones at the teacher’s request will result in a disciplinary referral for defiance and consequences will result.

DETENTIONS-In the classroom, a student may be assigned detention for a variety of disciplinary reasons as stated in the Student Handbook under Major/Minor Behavior infractions and the Three R’s. Parents will be notified if a detention is assigned. I adhere to the rules as stated in the Atchison County Community Schools Student Handbook regarding attendance and discipline. I fully expect students to review the material and follow it. As always, I maintain discretionary rights. Disciplinary action will be taken according to the student handbook policies

ELECTRONIC USAGE: Students are to bring their iPads/Chrome Books to class every day even though they may not be used every art class. Overall, we do not use electronics in art but there are times when we do research and online scavenger hunts. As stated above, students are not allowed to use them without asking permission from the teacher first. Students are to keep the iPads in a facedown position on the table at all times when iPads are not in use. When in use, and when the teacher says “homebase,” students are to get off their iPads and place them in a facedown position. The same applies to the Chrome Books except they will fold them shut.

GRADING: Grades will be based on a total point system using scores from classroom assignments, participation, Bellwork, quizzes and tests. Major art projects are graded specifically from a rubric on the following composition: craftsmanship, creativity, participation and effort. These rubrics vary based on the specific project and its criterion. Students can earn up to 100 points per art project. Most major art projects will be 100 points with smaller assignments ranging from 10-75 points.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: Although the school will provide most of the materials required for this course, it is absolutely essential that students bring the supplies (listed at the end of this syllabus), and a pencil daily. Also, students will occasionally be required to bring visual resources, items, or personal belongings from home to be used as inspiration or motivation on projects. Failure to bring in personal items will make it difficult or impossible to complete the projects. BELOW is a list of art supplies that are required for this course.

MAKE-UP POLICY: Students will be held responsible for work missed while absent. It is the student’s responsibility to discuss with the instructor an acceptable extension plan. Bellwork can be made up by getting the vocabulary terms from the instructor or another student. Free sketches can also be made up during PAWS or arrangements can be made for an alternative free sketch at my discretion. Late work will not be turned in to the teacher more than 5 days after the final due date. Regarding absences, each day a student is absent, he will have that many days to make up the work. For example, if a student is absent 1 day, the student will have 1 day to make up that work, etc. No extra credit in art! If a student falls behind in art, the teacher has the right to assign them to come into art during PAWS.

MEDIUM SAFETY: Each medium holds a specific set of safety rules and classroom policies. As an introduction to each medium, we will go over the specific safety rules and classroom policies for that particular medium. Also, each student will receive a handout outlining the specific rules and policies. I do not take lightly the disregard for safety rules in an art studio. In school suspension, dismissal from class, and loss of credit are all possible actions taken regarding a violation of a safety rule. Classroom policies regarding specific mediums must be followed at all times. Failure to do so may result in detention, dismissal from class, zero credit.

PARTICIPATION (Time on Task): It is essential that students participate in classroom discussions and critiques. These opportunities cannot be made up when they are missed. It is also essential that students are in the classroom and prepared to work when the bell rings. Classroom participation points will be awarded to students who: 1.) are in their seat and ready to work when the bell rings, 2.) make quality use of their time in this class, 3.) participate in classroom discussions and activities. Points awarded in the classroom participation category could add up to one quarter (25%) of the overall grade for this class.

PREPAREDNESS TO CLASS:A student coming to class unprepared makes it impossible for a student to successfully complete their work and participate in class discussions/activities. Student unpreparedness includes things such as arriving to class without their supplies; pencils, markers, iPad/Chrome Books, picture resources, reading/doing a homework assignment, agenda, or anything else a teacher deems unprepared. A teacher will assign a detention if the student comes unprepared to class more than 3 times and parents will be notified.

RESTROOM PRIVILEGES: If a student does not have their agenda, they will not be allowed to use the restroom. Students may not use another student’s agenda at any time. If it is an extreme emergency, the teacher will call the office and an administrator will “escort” the student to the restroom. Any student caught abusing their restroom privileges will lose them. The teacher has the right to ask the student to leave their cell phone before they go to the restroom. Refusing to leave the cellphone may result in a disciplinary referral for defiance and consequences will result. *Students are allowed to bring a clear water bottle with water only. No Gatorade, etc.

SUBSTITUTES:In the event that I am absent from class and have a substitute teacher, all students will be expected to cooperate and treat the substitute with respect as if it were me teaching. Each substitute teacher is instructed to leave notes on any students misbehaving or not doing the project/assignment I have left for the day. If a substitute leaves any negative report on a student, disciplinary action will be taken according to the student’s infraction. Negative reports will result in an automatic disciplinary referral to the assistant principal. A student may also lose grade points for that assignment. Consequently, students will not be allowed to make-up those points.
