AccessAdvisoryCommitteetotheMBTA(AACT)

WHATISAACT?

TheAccessAdvisoryCommittee totheMBTA(AACT) is an advocacy group thatwas createdtoprovide adviceabout transit accessibility

forpersons with disabilities and seniorstotheMassachusettsBayTransportationAuthority (MBTA).

AACT’spredecessorwas theSpecial NeedsAdvisory Committee (SNAC), whichwasformedin 1975 toensure thatpeople withdisabilities would have the benefit of accessible publictransportation.SNACplayedasignificantroleinimproving thelimited paratransit services(door-to-door, demand-responsiveservices)thattheMBTAprovidedatthattime.In1988,thecommittee was renamedAACT, which is governed byan all-volunteerboard ofdirectorswhose members areelectedevery twoyears.

Nowin its27th year,AACTcontinuestoadvocateforthedisability communitybefore theMBTA.

AACTmakesrecommendationstotheMBTApertaining to both paratransit (THE RIDE) and fixed-route services. It is represented on a number of MBTAcommitteesand is avotingmember of the RegionalTransportationAdvisory Council.

HOWCANYOUPARTICIPATE?

MostAACTmembersarepeoplewithdisabilitiesand seniors, but participationisopen to everyone.AnAACTparticipantwhoattends atleasttwomeetingsper yearis consideredamember ofAACT.

AACTholdsmonthlymeetingstodiscussissuesrelatedtoaccessible transportation(seethemeetingschedule on the backof this brochure).Mostof theattendees are transitand paratransitcustomers,MBTAseniorstaff,paratransitserviceproviders, and representativesofhumanservicesagencies.MBTAstaff andservice

providers present reportsonissues of concern,and attendeesaregiven the opportunity toaskquestionand makecomments.
