Archetypes GROUP ACTIVITY:

Archetypes are an image, story pattern, or character type which recurs frequently and evokes strong associations in the reader. For example, the wicked witch, the enchanted prince, the sleeping beauty, and the fairy godmother are widely dispersed throughout folk literature and appear in slightly different forms in poetry, drama, and novels.

Directions: In your assigned group, complete the following directions:

1) Delegate each of the three types of archetypes to each member of the group.

2) Situational Archetypes:

·  Choose 5 of the archetypes and list examples of the archetype, and explain how they represent that archetype. You must explain the examples in full detail. Draw a picture to represent each example.

3) Character Archetypes:

·  Choose 5 of the archetypes and list examples of the archetype, and explain how they represent that archetype. You must explain the examples in full detail. Draw a picture to represent each example.

4) Symbolic Archetypes:

·  Choose 3 of the archetypes and list examples of the archetype, and explain how they represent that archetype. You must explain the examples in full detail. Draw a picture to represent each example.

5) Each member of the group must write on his or her own paper and determine which archetype they are explaining.

6) When you are finished, discuss each of the examples with your group and prepare to present your ideas to the class.
