INTRODUCTION:
Transport for NSW is putting a call out to the most creative minds in the advertising industry. Art Directors, Copywriters, Designers and artists, here’s your chance to have your work presented as part of the official 2015 Sculpture by the Sea exhibition held at Bondi.
Accepting individuals or groups, please see below for a detailed brief:
BACKGROUND:
The Maritime Management Centre (MMC), part of Transport for NSW, established the Old4New lifejacket upgrade program in 2013. This safety initiative involves the Old4New van visiting popular NSW boating ramps, providing the opportunity for people to trade in their old lifejackets for new modern styles.
The program has collected over 6,000 of these old lifejackets which are currently stored in a big warehouse gathering dust. Compared to the new slim-fitting lifejacket styles, the old lifejackets that have been collected are considered old fashioned, uncomfortable and bulky.
Transport for NSW would like to commission an artist/s to produce a piece of workfeaturing the use of old lifejackets to enter in Sculpture by the Sea 2015.
For more information about MMC, Lifejackets and the Old4New program visit maritimemanagementcentre.transport.nsw.gov.au

MATERIALS:
A range of old lifejackets will be made available for use on the project, other materials can be utilised but the design should be primarily built using the lifejackets.
The material selection is not only important from a longevity and maintenance perspective but also for public safety. The sculpture will be utilised for events post Sculpture by the sea, this must be considered when developing the concepts. Details of maintenance procedures will need to be prepared by the artist/artists’ team should the proposals be commissioned. Consideration should be given to minimising maintenance work.
LOCATION:
The coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama in Sydney will be the precinct for the work. The exact location of the sculpture is at the discretion of Sculpture by the Sea. However, the artist may request a specific location within the exhibition location (see site map attached).

Intellectual Property Rights in this commission remain vested in the artist/s. However, the artist/artist’s team acknowledges that the final sculpture may be used by Transport for NSW in future events.
PROJECT CONSIDERATIONS:
The public nature of this project requires community perceptions to be carefully considered. The work should seek to engage, intrigue or amuse but not intentionally outrage members of the public by making racist, political or sexist statements. The proposed sculpture should be of high artistic integrity, immediately engaging observers.
The artist/artist’s team should adopt a site-specific approach (see site map in Sculpture by the Sea application) and should consider the placement of artwork/s in relation to pedestrian movement.
When any structure is in an unsupervised public place the artist must exercise a Duty of Care in the design of the sculpture. The artist must address risk considerations, such as but not limited to:
• ensuring there are no dangerous protrusions which might cause injury;
