ACC Leisure Services Department’s New or Outstanding Services Offered

  • Held 37 different events that generated 87 performances at the historic Morton Theatre involving18,637 patrons and performers. The box office staff handled 2,941 orders for 9,004 tickets.
  • Partnered with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce’s LEAD Athens program to co-sponsor the inaugural Midnight 5K to benefit the Lay Park fitness room and programs.
  • PresentedIndia: Land of Enchantment - A Festival Featuring the Fascinating and Colorful Culture of Indiafor which Lyndon House Arts Center was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Approximately 1,400 visitors were treated to cricket, dance,a fashion show, music, storytelling, and traditional Indian food.
  • Accepted 552 artworks for consideration from 207 Athens area artists for the annual Juried Art Show at Lyndon House Arts Center. A total of 185 pieces of art were chosen for the show.
  • Presented 10 school performances by Athens Creative Theatre in seven counties.
  • Co-hosted the annual Martin Luther, King, Jr. Holiday Celebration which had 20 partner groups with more than 1,000 volunteers. More than 200 people attended the performances and hands-on activities for families at Lyndon House Arts Center.
  • Produced the Live Art Production: Broadway to Movies 2013. The unique show represented more than 20 Broadway musicals with more than 28 musical selections and incorporated more than 62 volunteer participants.
  • Co-organized the Rivers Alive! Clean-up with 288volunteers working at 20 sites throughout Athens-Clarke County.
  • Partnered with the Clarke County School District to provide 15 youth internships with the department.
  • Continued partnership with the University of Georgia to obtain free tickets to sporting events for Leisure Services youth participants through the Dawg Bones program.
  • Partnered with DiscoverLife, a citizen science initiative supported by the University of Georgia’s Odum School of Ecology, thereby creating a long-term moth observatory onsite at Sandy Creek Nature Center that will be used by students and volunteers to monitor ecological changes in the local area.
  • Completed year-long educational services contact with Clarke County School District and provided programming for all students, kindergarten-5th grade, on standards-based science subjects. More than 4,000 students participated in Sandy Creek Nature Center programs both onsite and in their schools.
  • Continued to maintain Social Media presence through Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter highlighting Leisure Services events and programs.
  • Partnered with the University of Georgia’s Horticulture Department to develop and maintain a community garden at the Rocksprings Community Center.
  • Presented 1,065 artworks at Lyndon House Arts Center in eight different exhibitions created by 348 artists.
  • Conducted six special wellness programs exclusively for Athens-Clarke County Government employees to promote “July is National Park and Recreation Month” and the Department’s facilities and programs.
