Integrated Unit Plan Title: Animal Farm
Courses to integrate: English 1 and Law Studies/Career Research

Timeline & Duration: 6 weeks-English/4 weeks Law Studies/ 4th quarter
Unit Summary: Students will read, analyze, and discuss Animal Farm, its characters, and its allegorical interpretation. They will conduct a mock trial incorporating various characters and themes from the story; finally they will reflect on the implications of the actions of the real life people and events of the Russian Revolution.

Activity/Lesson / Students will complete Anticipation Guide which focuses on themes from Animal Farm / -Students will select roles (i.e. Plaintiff, Defense Attorney, Witness, Juror, etc.)
Activity/Lesson / Read about George Orwell, Russian Revolution, Government and Economic Systems, and Allegory. / In groups, students will create the Mock Trial based on guidelines provided in the Mock Trial Procedures Packet.
Activity/Lesson / Read and analyze George Orwell’s Animal Farm, focusing on character development and allegory. / Students will present Mock Trial.
Activity/Lesson / After the mock trial, students will reflect on the allegorical interpretations of Animal Farm and legal implications of the characters and real life people.

Standards:): SS.912.C.3.6 Analyze the structures, functions, and processes of the judicial branch as described in Article III of the Constitution.
Instructions to Teacher: Guide students through the steps of the Mock Trial Guide. Facilitate the presentation of the Mock Trial (optional: teacher acts as the Judge to insure order in the presentation)
Instructions to Students: after roles are established, students will prepare for their role in the case. Teams will be divided up by plaintiff and defense.

Cooperative learning, small group activities and discussion, additional time to complete assignments, abridged version of text, visual aides
Assessment for Activity: Peer evaluation and evaluation by a student generated participation rubric.

Instructions to Teacher: (1) Have students fill out responses to Anticipation Guide. (2) Have a moving Socratic Seminar where students who agree go to the left side of the room and students who disagree go to the right side of the room. Students then discuss the reasons they agree or disagree with the statements and provide evidence from a personal anecdote, something they have read, or something they have observed. (3) After students read four informational texts (George Orwell, Russian Revolution, Government and Economic Systems, and Allegory), discuss them with students. (4) As students read Animal Farm, instruct them to keep a double sided entry journal regarding how the characters develop throughout the story. Instruct the students to have direct quotations on the left, and their analysis of that quote and the development of the character as it relates to that quote on the right. (5) After Mock Trial, have students reflect on Animal Farm, focusing on the allegorical interpretations and the characters/real life events and people.
