LONDON CALLING: The Diocesan Bishop has extended an invitation to members of the congregations of the Parish of Leeds City to visit the House of Lords on Tuesday 25 October this year. Pam Eden – 267 7571 – would be very glad to hear from parishioners who would be interested in going on this trip so that arrangements can be made in good time, especially with regard to transport. We will be going there and back in a day, arriving in time for Lunch and a talk by the Bishop prior to Question Time and then return home in the evening. We are very grateful indeed to Bishop John for extending this invitation to us.

VERGER’S RETIREMENT: Mrs Maeve Gomersall, verger and supporter of Holy Trinity and Leeds Parish Church for fourteen years, has retired. Contributions to a gift in recognition of her years of loyal service are welcome and may be given to any member of the ministerial team.

FAREWELL TO THE FAITHFUL: At the final School Assembly prior to Half Term held in St Peter’s School the Staff and Pupils bade a reluctant farewell to two senior members of staff – Mr Gowland and Mrs Parker, highly popular and respected individuals responsible for the care and upkeep of the building and the nourishment of all within it! There were two special songs appropriate to each – If I had a hammer by the Staff ensemble, specially recorded on DVD, for Mr Gowland and Food, glorious food sung live in honour of Mrs Parker – and delightful presentations to both from representatives from each year group. We wish both a long and happy retirement.

PANCAKE RACES: on 8 March at 2.00 pm in the Parish Church Precincts. Please note that there is no parking behind the church on that day (Tuesday 8 March), so we would ask you to make alternative arrangements and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

FOCUS ON . . .

SAINT DAVID, PATRON SAINT OF WALES

David, or Dewi died around 601 and has been regarded as the patron saint of Wales since at least the 12th century. He was a Celtic monk and bishop believed to have founded the monastery at Menevia, now St David’s, as well as at least a dozen other monasteries.

St David’s day falls on 1 March when we celebrate a festival for someone who is widely regarded as an exemplar of the ascetic, spiritual life. He is said to have based his monastic rule on that of the Desert Fathers of Egypt, with a noted emphasis on hard work, abstinence from alcohol, and a refraining from superfluous and unnecessary speech. The rigour of his life of asceticism and self-denial led him to be known as the “waterman”. He is also highly regarded for his kindness and compassion to others, particularly the poor and the sick.

According to the traditions of the Welsh church, and together with two companions, Elivd (later known as Teilo) and Paternus (later known as Padarn), David is said to have made a pilgrimage to the Holy City of Jerusalem. There, following angelic instructions said to have been received by the Patriarch in a dream, all three friends were consecrated as bishops before returning to Wales where each of them then founded monasteries. Our St David’s Day service takes place at Holy Trinity this coming Tuesday 1 March at 1.05 pm.
