2.Information Items

a.Chair's Report

University Service Opportunities – The Academic Senate Website details the service opportunities to the Faculty -- listed are search committees, academic senate seats, and university wide committees. The Senate News is located at

WASC – Chair Flores is Chair of the WASC Committee. The process is different than in the past. There will be more involvement of the campus community. A survey was distributed to the campus community at the Fall Conference meetings. The WASC Committee needs as much input as possible.

Collegiate Learning Assessment – Dr. Claudia Pinter-Lucke, Interim Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Studies, distributed a handout. The handout outlined the Collegiate Learning Assessment Lumina Longitudinal Project. The implementation process was outlined as well.

b.President’s Report

Fall Conference – Fall Conference was successful. Approximately 175 individuals participated in the afternoon session on enhancing Student Success in the Net Generation.

Hurricane Katrina- Cal Poly admitted 11 students from the institutions affected by Hurricane Katrina. The CSU admitted 383 students.

Hot Dog Caper - The Hot Dog Caper is scheduled tomorrow, September 29, in University Park from11:30 – 1 p.m.

President Scholars Dinner –Twenty undergraduate and four graduate students were honored on Friday, September 23 at the President Scholars Dinner.

Children’s Center - -The Children’s Center received a $127,000 grant for 2005-06 to assist parents. The grant will be used to provide 40 qualifying students with child care.

Student CommunicationSystem – Bronco Bytes and Bronco Events will be sent to students electronically. These communications will help to inform students about campus deadlines, events, etc.

c.Statewide Senators' Report

Senator Kellner reported.

The CSU Academic Senate met September 15-16 in Long Beach. Theinformation packet is on their web at Senator Kellner highlighted the topics of Lower Division Transfer Project, Curriculum Issues, CSU GE Breath Requirements and Repeat Policies. Detailed information is on the web.

  1. CFA Representative's Report

Emma Gibson, CFA President reported.

Salary Increase – Effective July 1, 2005, the CFA negotiated a 3.56 salary increase. Negotiations are continuing.

Reception – The CFA will have their Fall Reception on Tuesday, October 11 from 4- 6 p.m. in the BroncoStudentCenter, Ursa Minor. Information was distributed.

CFA is urging a “No” vote on Propositions 75 and 76.

  1. ASI President's Report

Senator Jungo reported.

ASI is working to improve the use of student services. They hope to make students more aware.

The ASI will be sponsoring Bronco Voter Rush 05. Information on the propositions will be available.

  1. Staff Representative’s Report

Dennis Tilford reported.

Several staff members have voiced concern over the Bronco Express Bus System. A suggestion was made that warning lights be installed on the buses. When the passengers cross in front of the bus, vehicles do not always see them.

Vice President Farris stated she would investigate.

The Faculty Affairs Committee recommends that Appendix 38 be amended as follows.(ATTACHMENT A)

M/s to adopt the report.

Senator Soe presented the report.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Academic Affairs Committee recommends adoption of the form attached along with the expanded definition of “significant” included in the CSU Pomona “POLICY: Disclosure of Conflict of Interest for Principal Investigators” form. (ATTACHMENT B)

The motion to adopt passed.

Recommendations

The Academic Programs Committee recommends acceptance of the Theater Department Assessment Plan in lieu of the Five-Year Program Review.

Recommendations

The Academic Programs Committee recommends acceptance of the Philosophy Department Assessment Plan in lieu of the Five-Year Program Review.

Recommendations

The Academic Programs Committee recommends acceptance of the Economics Department Assessment Plan in lieu of the Five-Year Program Review.

The Academic Programs Committee recommends approval of the Assessment Plan of the Anthropology Department.

Recommendations

The Academic Programs Committee recommends the acceptance of the Program Review of the Horticulture/Plant & Soil Science Department

The motion passed.

  1. GE-004-045, ENG 235, War and Peace in Literature – SECOND READING

M/s to adopt the report.

Senator Rainey presented the report.

Recommendation

The GE Committee has found this course to be in compliance with the guidelines for area C3. There were no comments on the Undergraduate Studies website. The course was approved by the GE Committee on April 20, 2005 and is now forwarded to the Academic Senate for consideration.

The motion passed.

Chair Flores restated his request that the senators be placed as a regular agenda item on the department/college meetings. They will be able to inform the constituency of the Senate activities.

Chair Flores also restated his request to the deans to establish communication between the Senators and the Dean. This could be done in many ways.

The Academic Senate Office has updated the website. Chair Flores asked for feedback. The Academic Senate intends topublicize the Senate information on the website and also in Poly Updates.
