About Triology

Triology is an ensemble of three exceptional string virtuosos who have spontaneously branched out from their classical roots. They transform chamber music by performing with the energy of rock musicians while developing an unusually intimate connection with their audiences.

Now based in Vienna where they first met, Aleksey Igudesman, Daisy Jopling and Tristan Schulze were drawn together by their mutual passion for music. Since their debut in 1995 at the Porgy & Bess jazz club in Vienna, Triology has performed on radio and television broadcasts throughout the world.

Each performance consists of original works by the individual members, as well as innovative arrangements of the works of composers such as Astor Piazzolla, Paco de Lucia and Ennio Morricone. Their repertoire also features classical compositions and invigorating renditions of folk music from Africa, India and Ireland.

In 1997, the ensemble caught the attention of BMG/RCA VICTOR and signed a six-CD contract with the label. A year later, Triology’s first recording, Triology Plays Ennio Morricone, was released worldwide. It was not only well-received by the press, even Ennio Morricone himself praised it.

Discovered by Hans Zimmer during their performance at the Filmmusik Biennale in Bonn, they were invited to participate in the soundtrack of DreamWorks’ motion picture, The Road To El Dorado in 2000.

Their second recording, Who Killed The Viola Player, was a combination of original compositions by Tristan Schulze and Aleksey Igudesman and arrangements of pieces by Astor Piazzolla, Paco de Lucia as well as Irish folk music.

Triology also likes to collaborate with other artists. The trio became a string quartet for the first time when they were joined by renowned violinist Julian Rachlin, who debuted on the viola in a performance of Tristan Schulze’s The Resurrection of the Viola Player. They have also collaborated with internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel for a tour of Austria, including a concert in the Konzerthaus in Vienna.

Highlights of Triology’s 2000-02 season included appearances at the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, the Gewandhaus Leipzig, the Ravenna Festival in Italy, the Bremen and Bregenz festivals as well as tours to the United States, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, Scandinavia, England and Japan.

In 2002, Triology released the CD Around the World in 77 minutes, which was immediately nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Awards. In May 2003, Triology opened the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival) to a crowd of 30,000 people, an event which was broadcast live on Austrian television.

The trio’s main composer and arranger, Tristan Schulze, crafts his pieces with a particular performer in mind, utilising the full range of that individual’s expressive and technical abilities. Aleksey Igudesman’s compositions tend to be theatrical, calling upon the performers to display dramatic and comedic skills. The result is a uniquely exuberant and virtuoso performance for which Triology has received delighted responses from audiences and critics alike.
