Will I need an Architect

At New Forest Log Cabinswe are able to produce a set of drawings that will allow customers to arrange a feasibility consultation with the planning department and dependant on the size of the project and how much work you are able to do yourself, you will find the services of an Architect helpful and give your project the best chance of getting the planning permission you need before going ahead with turning your ideas into reality.

Planning Application

An Architect will take the drawings we produce and create a full set of floor plans, elevations, typical sectional layout, location and site plan and material details. Including completion of the application forms and design & access statements.

Building Regulation Application

Similar to the Planning application drawings with additional information i.e. specification, details and layout for: Drainage (Foul & Surface water), window & door (external & internal) codes and sizes, stairs, smoke detectors, mean of escape, ventilation construction details. Drawings must be used in addition to, not in place of planning drawings.

SAP Calculation

A calculation based on insulation values, heating type, building aspect etc. to calculate the thermal efficiency of the building. A SAP calculation is usually required for Building Control Approval.

Geotechnical survey

Survey that investigates the ground conditions on site allowing a foundation engineer to design an appropriate bearing for the building.

Dimensional survey

Survey that charts all dimensions and levels of the site allowing the designer to accurately size and place the proposed building and produce a drawing to show the impact of the proposed building on the current street scene.

Foundation Design

Design & Engineering for the foundation based on ground conditions to ensure a base is produced that can support the building.

Air Pressure/ Leakage Test

Unless approved construction methods (such as Robust Standard Details) have been used, all new buildings over 500m2 GROSS floor area have been required to be tested for Air Permeability, in order to comply with Part L1 of the Building Regulations.

Ecohomes/ Code for Sustainable Homes assessment

From April 2007 the Code for Sustainable Homes will replace Ecohomes for the assessment of new housing in England. The Code aims to protect the environment by providing guidance on the construction of high performance homes built with sustainability in mind.

Project Management

If you don’t have the time to spare to manage your build an Architect should be able to recommend an experienced project manager who will ensure that your building is constructed on time and within budget.
