Abilene’s Signature Football Event Celebrates Second Decade of West Texas Football

ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Sports Alliance is proud to announce the 11th annual Action Zone Champions Classic. The Classic is promoted by the Abilene Sports Alliance, a committee under the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Sports Alliance was formed to increase the economic impact in the Abilene community through sporting events. One goal is to raise money for scholarships awarded each year to graduating seniors from each of the local high schools, thus, the Classic was born. A decade later the Classic is now their signature event.

“So many great memories have been made with the matchups we’ve had each year,” Doug McIntyre, Sports Alliance Chair said. “Yes, the football has been legendary and we are proud that our Classic has become a nationally recognized, respected event, but we remain steadfast in our goal to help local high school athletes pursue higher education.”

To date $90,000 has been awarded in scholarships to high school graduates.

“By awarding me the scholarship, I am able to concentrate on what is important to me, my education.” Conner Nichols, 2015 Abilene High graduate.

The line-up for the Classic promises more authentic West Texas football with local teams taking on talented Texas teams from all over the state. The first game kicks off at 7:30 pm Friday, September 4 between Cooper High School and Austin Vandergrift. Saturday morning, September 5, at 10 am, a six man match up as Abilene Christian High takes on Brentwood Christian. The final game of the Classic will be Saturday night at 6 pm when the Abilene High Eagles go head to head with San Antonio Warren.

Players and fans from each area will pour into Abilene to see the games. The ACVB estimates that $200,000 will be pumped into the Abilene economy because of the Classic. The ACVB and the Sport Alliance encourages the public to attend the games and cheer on local teams and support the event.

“Abilene is known throughout the state for tremendous football, but also our gracious southern hospitality,” Debi Schultz, Sales Director for the ACVB. “By coming out to these games we show our guests that we appreciate their business in our community.”

Champions Classic games are included in season tickets; prices vary by game at the gate.
