Definitions

Abbreviation Expansion

A keystroke saving feature offered on many text-to-speech communication devices. This feature allows users to type two or three letters to abbreviate short phrases or sentences. When the user puts in these letters, an entire phrase or sentence can be produced.

Auditory Scanning

A method of feedback to the user where the device emits a word or phrase to indicate to the user which message is currently selected. Used with clients who have visual deficits or difficulty with head control.

Digitized Speech

Speech that has been compiled from recordings of human speech.

Direct Select

A method of choosing a message from a communication system by pointing/pressing with a part of the body or an implement, but usually by pointing.

Environmental Control Unit

A unit within the communication device that allows the user to control his/her environment. Enables user to turn on/off and run items such as the stereo, lights, and television.

Head Controlled Device

Allows full operation of the communication device via a mouse emulator controlled through the user’s head movements.

ICD 9 CODE

A code used for billing purposes. If you are in the public school setting call us for information.

Message Formulation

The individual is able to put pictures, words, phrases together to form sentences and/or thoughts.

Multi-meaning Icons

An icon is a graphic used to represent a concept or idea. Icons can appear on either a dynamic display, or static display communication device. Multi-meaning icons have different meaning depending on which pictures with they are combined.

Prestored Messages

A feature in communication devices which allows for the storing of entire messages on a single key. Saves keystrokes and makes communication quicker for routine messages. Can symbolize with either pictures, words, and/or phrases.

Synthesized Speech

Artificial speech that has been formulated by electronically combining sounds to produce words.

Visual Scanning

A selection technique which present groups of items to the user by means of an indication light. The user then signals with a switch press when the desired item is being indicated. Used with clients who are impaired motorically and cannot directly access their device. Client must have adequate visual skills.

Word Prediction

A keystroke saving feature offered on many text-to-speech communication devices. Allows the system to “guess” what the user is typing. As letters are typed, the device offers a list of words which match the letters already entered. If the desired word is on the list, the user selects it and the device types the remaining letters automatically.
