Abbreviated Summary of Course Syllabus: EMGT 5111: Management for Engineers & Scientists
Missouri University of Science & Technology, Rolla, MO.
This abbreviated summary is provided for distance (online) students who are seeking information about the course via the VCC website. This version may be updated from semester to semester.
The full syllabus will be available at the start of the course each semester and will contain additional information, including the course schedule for that semester, academic integrity policies, other university resources and policies relevant to the course, and information for the on-campus students.
Instructor: David G. Spurlock, Ph.D.E-Mail:
Office: 209 Engineering Management Building Phone: (573) 341-6190
Course Objectives: To introduce students to the principles, processes, and practices of management in organizations especially those enterprises with engineering and science missions.
To provide students with sufficient background to permit them to successfully evaluate arguments and evidence associated with managerial practice and scholarship
Course Format: The course consists of regular class meetings (including in-class exams) conducted in a lecture/discussion format supplemented by the texts and assignments. We will make use of relevant Internet resources, including the “Canvas” learning management system as it is implemented at S&T. Here is a link to student resources for using Canvas:
This syllabus applies to both the on-campus and the online sections. However, online students may receive additional information from time to time to facilitate participation in the course. The grading policy appears on the next page of this abbreviated summary syllabus.
Grading Policy:Grades will be assigned based upon the following percentages:
90 –100 = A
80 – 89 = B
70 – 79= C
0 – 69= F (no D’s for grad students per university policy)
Grading will be based upon the points accumulated from:
Two in-class exams (weighted at 35% of overall grade for each exam – 70% total for exam component of overall course grade). The exams are CLOSED BOOK, CLOSED NOTES and online students will use the Examity online proctoring and exam administration service to take the exams unless otherwise directed during the first few weeks of the course. Information about using Examity will be available at the beginning of the course. Here is a link to the student information page at the Examity site:
I will say more about the details of the exam format/procedure approximately one or two weeks ahead of each exam. (Some unforeseen circumstances might cause changes to dates, but I intend to avoid changes if at all possible.)
Class participation/Assignments, Exercises, Quizzes (10% of overall grade). NOTE: This component can determine grades for students close to a grade boundary (e.g., the B to A & C to B borderlines) so don’t neglect it.
Class participation & citizenship: This refers to your attendance, conduct, and contributions to the overall success of the course and the learning experiences of your fellow students. In general, online students will be able to earn these points as long as they either attend live or watch the recordings of the lecture sessions. You are responsible for any information that you may have missed due to absence from class. Please note that if you engage in inappropriate classroom behaviors, I reserve the right to penalize you through point deductions or other procedures the university authorizes. Behaviors that I regard as severely disruptive or repeated excessively after warnings may result in point penalties beyond the 10% of this grade component and even removal from the course in accordance with university regulations.
Online students should attend live as much as they can, but I recognize that work conflicts may prevent live attendance. Please communicate with me (Dr. Spurlock) before the semester or early in the semester if your circumstances will not allow you to attend class live. You may need to attend live for presentations at the end of the course, but if you aren’t able to do that for legitimate reasons, please let me know ahead of time so alternative arrangements can be made.
Online students should minimize the sounds from your microphones by muting them when you aren’t actually talking. Try to limit any environmental noise in your immediate vicinity that might transmit through the microphone when you are talking. The VCC personnel can assist you if there is some issue with your microphone.
Assignments, exercises, quizzes: Instructions will be distributed at the appropriate time during the course. If the class attendance as a group is good, these will be kept to a minimum; however, I reserve the right to give assignments, exercises, & quizzes if attendance is not to my satisfaction. I reserve the right to ask those online students not able to attend live to contribute occasional written comments in some form if I believe that would be appropriate under the circumstances. (On-campus students will be expected to attend regularly.)
Paper and presentation (20% of overall grade)
All students will make presentations to the class during the last two class meetings of the course and submit papers on the same topic as the presentation. I will provide requirements and instructions, including due dates, in writing separately from this syllabus. This paper and presentation requirement usually will be fulfilled as teamwork. Teams will be established in the first half of the semester.
NOTE: You must earn your grade from those grade elements above in the proportions stated. DO NOT request to do “extra” work to raise your grade. I cannot allow students to earn grades via means not available to everyone and it doesn’t make sense to allow, for example, anyone who doesn’t have an “A” at the end of the course to do “extra” work to receive an “A.”
