2016 AASFAA Spring Conference

Welcome:Phillip Nelson – Welcome to the 48th Anniversary Banquet.

Invocation:Chip Quisenberry

Introduction of Special Guests:Phillip Nelson acknowledged Amy Berrier, SASAFAA President and Joan Bailey, FASFAA President Elect as special guests and presented Amy Berrier with the Honorary Admiral Award in Navy of state of Alabama from Governor Dr. Robert Bentley.

Lost Colleagues: Phillip asked membership to announce any colleagues lost in the last year. None announced.

Presentation of Membership Pins:

Lissa Powell and Stephanie Miller presented pins to members who first began their AASFAA membership 20, 25, 35, 40 or 45 years ago.

20 years of membership:

-Dr. Samuel O. Chuks – Bishop State Community College

-Linda A. Greene – Trenholm State Technical College

-Amy W. Rowell – Alabama Southern Community College

-Sharon D. Williams – Lawson State Community College

Retired Colleagues:Stephanie Miller announced the AASFAA members who have retired or will be retiring this year.

-Vickie J. Adams – Jacksonville State University

-Martha Arrington – Trenholm State Technical College

-Vanessa M. Kyles – Jefferson State Community College

Stephanie Miller presented all retired members with an Award of Excellence for years of service from Alabama Governor, Dr. Robert Bentley.

Phillip Nelson recognized Dr. Bill Wall for his 46 years of service to AASFAA as a Board member and Committee Chair. Phillip announced that AASFAA would be making an honorary donation to The Ronald McDonald House charity in honor of Dr. Wall.

Kelley D’Eath – motion for AASFAA to pay $250 to The Ronald McDonald House in honor of Dr. Bill Wall.

Acknowledgement of New AASFAA Members:Phillip Nelson asked any new members who were attending their first AASFAA Conference to please stand to be acknowledged. Amy Rowell asked any members who attended the New Aid Officers Workshop Tuesday morning, March 15th, to please stand and be acknowledged.

Over Award Presentation: Presented by Dr. Bill Wall

Over Award is the lowest award AASFAA gives. It is presented to a member who earns the recognition for a significant goof during the year that is worthy of being recognized. Selection is made by a panel of financial aid administrators whose decision serve no socially-redeeming purpose except for the fact that the recipient must contribute $1 to the Association’s Scholarship Fund along with any member in attendance who has received this award in the past.

-Shirley Speer Scholarship: Chip Quisenberry – Enterprise State Community College

-Floyd Johnston Scholarship: Jennifer Epperson – Samford University

-Bill Gentry Scholarship: Bonita Allen – Bishop State Community College

-Theresa Duke Scholarship: Donna Bass – Lurleen B. Wallace Community College

-Dr. William H. Wall Scholarship – Erma Perry – Wallace Community College (Dothan)

Presentation of Service Award recipients:Presented by Stephanie Miller

The John H. Buchanan, Jr. Distinguished Service Award and the M. Cecil Padgett Outstanding Achievement Award are two highest awards bestowed annually by AASFAA.

Stephanie Miller asked all past recipients of the John H. Buchanan, Jr. Distinguished Service Award to stand and be recognized.

Chip Quisenberry was asked to come up and present this year’s recipient.

-John H. Buchanan, Jr. Distinguished Service Award recipient: Kevin Ammons – earned Master’s Degree in 2004; was the Financial Aid Director at Troy University, was the Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Enterprise State Community College, now is the Associate Dean of Students at Enterprise State Community College and is working on his Doctorate Degree.

The M. Cecil Padgett Outstanding Achievement Award is presented annually to a member who is a practicing aid officer and has made significant contributions to higher education in Alabama during the year.

Stephanie Miller asked all past recipients of the M. Cecil Padgett Outstanding Achievement Award to stand and be recognized.

-M. Cecil Padgett Outstanding Achievement Award recipient: Vanessa Kyles –has served AASFAA for many years and colleagues stated she is hard working and enthusiastic to help students and coworkers. She has served as Vice President, Diversity Chair and many other positions with AASFAA and has always had student’s best interests at heart.

Phillip Nelson congratulated Kevin Ammons and Vanessa Kyles on their achievements.

Stephanie Miller recognized the hotel staff for their hard work serving the AASFAA association and Great Lakes for their assistance in providing materials for the New Aid Officers Workshop.

AASFAA Spring Conference

Ask a Fed Session

Phillip Nelson welcomed everyone to the final morning of the 2016 Spring conference. He thanked everyone for attending.

Kelley D’Eath reminded everyone to complete the conference survey and a volunteer form before leaving the conference.

Charity:

Theresa Mays announced that AASFAA had raised $2025 for the Ronald McDonald House charity and thanked everyone for their generosity and for bidding on the silent auction items. She introduced the Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mobile, AL, Paul Giardina. Mr. Giardina thanked the membership for the wonderful donation and expressed appreciation from the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Theresa Mays also announced that the toiletries used for decoration on the tables during the conference were also donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Elections and Bylaws change results:

Stephanie Miller announced winners for the 2016-2017 Executive Office elections.

-President: Kelley D’Eath, Gadsden State Community College

-President Elect: Brian Quisenberry, Birmingham Southern College

-Vice President: Amy Rowell, Alabama Southern Community College

-Secretary: Marcus Byrd, Alabama State University

-Treasurer Elect: Lane Smith, Samford University

-Treasurer: Jay Powell, Financial Aid Consultant

Stephanie Miller announced the proposed Bylaws change to remove Article IV, Section G2 was approved by membership.

Kelley D’Eath introduced David Bartinicki to begin the Ask a Fed Session.
