If you won the lottery what would be the first thing you’d do? Buy a flashy car? Maybe. A house with a swimming pool? Probably. Go on that holiday you've always dreamed about? Definitely. Here are some lucky lottery winners and where they chose to go.

When Lyn, a housewife from Upminster, found out that she had won the lottery, she and her husband had already booked a two-week holiday in Barbados. "We saw no reason to change our holiday plans just because we had won the lottery," said Lyn. They did, however, go out to celebrate their good fortune. Naturally, Lyn went on a wild shopping spree, buying things for herself and her family. In Barbados, they stayed in a luxurious hotel and spent their time relaxing and dreaming about what they would do with their money.

Esther, a former nursery school worker from London, did exactly the same things she does every year. She took time off work to visit her family and friends in Ireland and celebrate her good luck. "I'd always wanted to travel, but up till now I never had enough money," said Esther. Then a friend suggested going to Tenerife which Esther did without thinking twice.

" It's a real feeling of freedom," she added. In Tenerife she did some sightseeing, went to the beach and bought loads of clothes. Her next holiday destination is Disney World.

Ken, an engineer from York, decided to celebrate his fortune in Italy where he went skiing with a group of friends for ten days. "It's all that I want to do when I'm away on holiday," said Ken excitedly. He tried out all the difficult ski slopes and had a great time. Ken believes that winning the lottery won’t change the way he spends his holiday. He said: "I'll just do more skiing, maybe in Canada or America where they have good snow."

Margaret, a machine operator from Birmingham, and her husband wanted to spend a peaceful and relaxing holiday away from it all. They wanted to go somewhere warm and sunny, so they chose the Canaries. They stayed in a beautiful hotel with a view of the beach. "We did a lot of walking, sunbathing and played a bit of tennis," said Margaret.

Writers’ Lives

  1. Sir Arthur Conan DOYLE (1859- 1930)

Doyle, who is famous for his unforgettable fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he studied medicine. The detective character is said to be based on one of Doyle’s professors. Doyle’s medical practice was not very successful, so he decided to take up writing, not medicine, as a career. Fans continue to visit Baker Street, Holmes’s fictional London address, today. All together, there are 56 Holmes stories and three other novels. After the death of his eldest son in World War I Doyle gave up writing and began to practise and teach spiritualism.

B.Oscar WILDE (1854-1900)

Wide is noted for his extraordinatry style in both life and art. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, where his mother held meeting for writers to come and discuss their work. At OxfordUniversity he was an excellent scholar. He was noted for his humour and the unusual way he dressed. His first generally accepted successs was The Portait of Dorian Gray. Wide wrote several plays , showing the ridiculous side of social behaviour. In 1895 he was accused of a crime for which he spent two years in prison, sentenced to hard labour. This experience ruined him. He died in Paris, where admirers still go to his grave to pay their respects.

C.Jane AUSTEN 91775-1817)

Austen was born into the family of a wealthy English clergyman , Steventon, Hampshire. She is often called “The First Great Woman Novelist”. It is said that she used to do her writing under her embroidery; as soon as anyone walked into the room, she would hide her pen and paper under the cloth and pick up her needle. When they discovered her talent, her family encouraged her work. Most of Austen’s novels are generally about a young, upper class heroine in and English environment, and they end with a happy marriage. She is noted for her humour, fine expression and the detail of her observations. Jane Austen lies buried in Winchester Cathedral – a great honour.

D. George ELIOT (1819-1880)

Mary Ann Evans was born in Nuneaton, near Birmingham, in the same year as Queen Victoria, who later became one of her greatest fans. Visitors to Nuneaton nowadays are sometimes surprised to find pubs, hotel rooms, and even cakes in coffee shops named after characters in her books. Bright and curious, but from quite a poor family, Mary Ann educated herself until she turned seventeen. Because women’s writing was not valued much, Mary Ann took the pen-name George Eliot, which she kept even after her identity became public. Unusually for a woman, she was recognized as and excellent writer in her lifetime, which was a long and productive one. Readers enjoy her deep understanding of moral dilemmas and human problems. Among her most well-known books are The Mill on the Floss and Middlemarch.

A for St Lucia,B for New Year, C for the Carnival and D for Trung Thu.

CELEBRATION TIME!

Throughout the world people celebrate for many different reasons and at different times of the year. Here are just a few examples of the reasons people have for celebrating.

A.St Lucia

First, let's go to Sweden where the 13th of December is the festival of St Lucia. On this day the Swedish traditionally have lussekatts, a kind of sweet with raisins, for breakfast. It is also a tradition to light candles in honour of St Lucia. Also, in junior schools throughout the country they choose one of the girls to dress up and wear a crown with candles in it to lead the St Lucia Day procession.

B. Chinese New Year

Next is Hong Kong. The most important celebration of the year is, without a doubt, the Chinese New Year. It usually takes place in February. It lasts for fifteen days and is a time for families and friends to get together to eat, drink and have fun. The main reason for the celebration is to bring health, wealth and happiness to the family for the coming year. Just before the celebration begins people clean their houses from top to bottom to get rid of the previous year's bad luck. The highlight of the celebration is the street parade led by a dancing dragon that contains up to fifty people.

C. Carnival Thebiggest celebration in Latin America, the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, takes place at around the same time of year. The celebration lasts for three days. The biggest event is the Samba School Parade in which about 50,000 people take part. They are dressed in exotic costumes and they dance along the grand parade avenue from seven o'clock in the evening until the early hours of the morning.

D.Thrung Thu

Finally, we move to Vietnam where every autumn the Trung Thu Festival is held. The purpose of this festival is to celebrate the beauty of the moon which looks bigger and brighter at this time than at any other time of the year. Young people buy lanterns with candles which they light and take out into the street at night. They also wear funny masks. The light from the lanterns represents the brightness of the moon. Everyone also eats Moon Cakes with specially prepared sweet fillings of sugar and eggs.

Which festival(s)
