Learning Experiences

Instructional planning: Include lessons, activities and other learning experiences in this section with a brief description of the activities to ensure student acquisition of the knowledge and skills addressed in the standards. Complete the sequence of instruction for each lesson/task in the unit.

Sequence of Instruction

1. Identify the Standards. Standards should be posted in the classroom for each lesson.

CTAE-FS-10: Learners plan and manage academic-career plans and employment relations.

2. Review Essential Questions.

3. Ask the students to define ASE Certification?

§  ASE is a system of excellence in the automotive industry that is nationally recognized.

4. Ask students to explain why having ASE Certification is important?

§  ASE Certification inspires consumer confidence.

§  ASE assures customers that their vehicle will be well taken care of and serviced in a proper manner.

5. Discuss with students the history of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification.

The History of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence was established in 1972 in response to consumer needs for a way to certify and truly trust their automotive technicians and mechanics. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is an independent and non-profit organization that helps certify technicians and that ultimately helps improve the quality of vehicle repair and service.

Prospective technicians seeking ASE certification register and take one or more of the 40+ exams that the National Institute for ASE offers. Tests are grouped into specific categories including: automobile, medium/heavy truck, truck equipment, school bus, collision repair, engine machinists, alternate fuels technicians, parts specialists, automotive consultants, and collision damage estimators. In order to become ASE Certified, applicants must have passed at least one ASE Certification test and can furnish proof of two years of relevant work experience. To remain certified, technicians must renew their certification by being retested every five years. Tests are given twice a year at 750+ locations and computer-based testing is given at 200 sites for two 5-week periods each year. Tests cover knowledge of job related skills.

ASE Certification is very beneficial to consumers as well. ASE Certification gives the consumer a measurement of the knowledge and expertise of a technician. Having a technician that is ASE Certified gives a consumer a piece of mind that their vehicle is well taken care of and that the repair facility is employing the most qualified of professionals. ASE Certified technicians can be identified by patches on their uniforms that have the ASE insignia and their credentials are often displayed within the repair facility for which they work.

6. Administer Test 1 of ASE Certification as a practice test to students to test their existing knowledge of automobiles and their inner workings. (Automobile/Light Truck Study Guide)

7. Let students choose a testing area of interest and give students the ASE Certification Study Guide Materials that are found online at www.asecert.com under the ASE Resource Guide Section and in the Study Guides and Booklets section.

8. Explain to students the importance of ASE Certification and that this is a certification that will help further their careers after high school. Use “The Value of ASE Certification” Video to help make this point.

9. Use the “Test Preparation Steps” Movie to help students prepare for ASE Certification testing and go over the “Test Taking Tips”. Both of these are featured on the ASE website. www.ase.com

10. After studying the ASE Certification Study Guide Materials for a particular section administer the practice test for that section using the practice tests for sections A1-A8. These tests can be found at www.asetestpreparation.com

11. Ask students to explain how ASE Certification would help them as an automotive technician.

12. Ask students to elaborate on educational plans that would lead to ASE Certification

13. Have students complete an ASE Certification Test Registration Form.

§  Even though students are not eligible to obtain ASE Certification while still in high school, it will help them to develop their plans in obtaining certification in the future.

Attachments for Learning Experiences:

Use “The Value of ASE Certification” Video to help reiterate the value and importance of obtaining ASE Certification in the automotive repair industry. The video can be found be searching the title at www.metacafe.com

Use the “Test Preparation Steps” Movie and the “Test Taking Tips” features on the ASE website www.ase.com to help students prepare for the real test and the post-test in class.

Administer the practice test again to see how much students have learned and studied for their ASE Certification Test.

Notes & Reflections:

Because of the job experience required to obtain ASE Certification it is highly unlikely that students would be able to obtain ASE Certification while in school. By completing a test registration form students will be able to see what requirements for certification still need to be met so that they may obtain their certification later on. It is also best to review current testing practices before teaching this lesson.
