Interiors – Analytical Technician / Engineer

The Interiors – Analytical Technician / Engineerwill be responsible for the testing and supportfor new and existing product development and improvement. The candidate will be able to work in the development setting as well as communicate with Guardian manufacturing facilities throughout the world.

POSITION SUMMARY:

  • We are currently seeking anAnalytical Technician / Engineer to join our Science and Technology team.The desired candidate will provide technical testing tosupport highly complex, multi-discipline technology advancement projects. The candidate must support internal Engineering, Development and Research projects focused on glass and glass valued-added products. In this role the individual will be responsible for supporting material testing needs on the projects currently active in the research groups and plants.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

(All other duties as assigned)

  • Investigating glass and material properties and fit for use in Guardian businesses and R&D.
  • Activities may include: experimentation; laboratory simulations; data analysis; materials property measurements; microscopic analyses – all geared towards fundamental understanding of glass and glass value added material properties and applications to Guardian businesses
  • Perform technical analyses of glasses for properties and various attributes to apply the results toward improving processes and create new value-added products.
  • Provide laboratory testing for initial development and/or in-plant data generation and analysis

SCOPE AND IMPACT:

Performa broad range of work with minimal supervision while receiving guidance on more complex testing and evaluation issues from management. Provide technical expertise to a project team responsible for new product development and analytical techniques. Plans and executes independent work within analytical testing of glass and value added glass products.

Desired Skills and Experience

EDUCATION:

  • B.S. degreeor Associates Degree with 5 to 10 years of experience working in a laboratory / manufacturing industry.

EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Solid educational or work experience and experimental foundation with a working knowledge of glass science.
  • Possess good technical writing and presentation skills
  • General personal computer knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Strong communication skills are required to communicate project information in a professional manner to both technical and non-technical groups
  • Open minded with a strong desire to work with and contribute to an innovative team

Desirable:

  • Experience with spectroscopic means of investigating materials (UV, Visible and Near IR), Haze, Gloss, Transmission and Reflection
  • Familiarity with testing methods for glass and coated glass analysis and physical properties and material characterization testing. Such as: Defect Identification (Microscopic), SEM / EDX, Tribology, Stress Measurement, Fractography, Failure Analysis, Surface topography (roughness, feature mapping, etc.) and mechanical property testing.
  • Ability to perform hands on working in chemical experimentation including acid etching and other techniques for glass surface modification as required by lead scientist and engineers.
  • Ability to perform glass batching and melting as required by lead scientist and engineers.
  • General understanding of statistical techniques and software such as Minitab.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

The position will require minimal travel.

LOCATION:

This position will be based in Southeastern Michigan at Guardian’s Science and Technology Center (Carleton, MI).
