A RESOLUTION honoring the South Oldham High School Dragons Boys Basketball Team, 2013 8th Region Champions.
WHEREAS, throughout its short history, South Oldham High School has enjoyed limited success on the hardwood, with its boys' basketball team reaching the regional finals just one time in the past 15 years; and
WHEREAS, this year's South Oldham Dragons have set the standard for all future teams at the school to aspire to when, on March 2, 2013, they defeated arch rival Oldham County 58-48 to avenge an earlier loss in the district final, capture the 8th Region Championship, and advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time in the school's two-plus decades of existence; and
WHEREAS, although they were defeated in the opening round of the Sweet Sixteen, the Dragons and their fans can take enormous pride in a successful season which saw them record 24 wins against only eight losses, including a 6-1 record in the district and a 15-3 mark against 8th Region competition; and
WHEREAS, the leaders of the Dragons were seniors Shae Goodlett, who averaged 16.4 points and six rebounds per game and scored 60 points in the regional semifinals and finals combined, and Matthew Haysley, who averaged 12.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game; and
WHEREAS, South Oldham's starting five was rounded out by seniors Mitch Catinna and Michael Haysley, and junior Kyle Young; and
WHEREAS, other members of the Dragons squad included seniors Devonte Jones and Jack Sherry; juniors Jonathan Blair, Drew Bullock, Drew Greenwood, Michael Griffin, Drew Horsey, Zack McWilliams, and Jacob Roy; sophomore Luke Freed; and freshmen Isaac Fields, Josh Thomas. and Grant Williams; and
WHEREAS, South Oldham was guided to their first state tournament by Head Coach Steven Simpson, and assistants Bobby Simpson and Jason Burns; and
WHEREAS, the 2013 South Oldham Dragons should be recognized and honored for their accomplishments, dedication, and hard work, and for the thrills that they gave to their supporters on their way to their first Sweet Sixteen appearance;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
Section 1. The members of this Honorable Body, both individually and collectively, do hereby recognize and applaud the South Oldham Dragons Boys Basketball Team, Head Coach Steven Simpson and his assistants and support staff, Athletic Director Mitchell Irvin, Principal Dorenda Neihof, and Superintendent Dr. Will Wells upon winning the 2013 8th Region Basketball Championship, and wish the players and coaches good fortune in all future endeavors.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate shall transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mitchell Irvin, Athletic Director, South Oldham High School, 5901 Veterans Memorial Parkway, Crestwood, Kentucky 40014.
