A RESOLUTION honoring the Covington Catholic High School basketball team upon winning the 2014 KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament.

WHEREAS, on March 23, 2014, at historic Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, the Covington Catholic Colonels defeated the Scott County Cardinals 59-51 in overtime to win the 2014 KHSAA Boys' Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the win capped an incredible season that saw the Colonels win 33 games against only two defeats. Coming into the Sweet Sixteen rated number five in the state rankings, Covington Catholic defied the odds by defeating Clay County, Bardstown, and Bowling Green on their way to the state championship match-up against powerful Scott County; and

WHEREAS, in the championship contest, the Colonels trailed 36-28 going into the fourth quarter. Displaying the teamwork and calm under pressure that defined their season, Covington Catholic rallied to tie the game at 47 apiece on two free throws by Nick Ruthsatz with 50.5 seconds left in regulation; and

WHEREAS, in overtime, the Colonels' defense held Scott County to 1-10 shooting, while connecting on four of six free throws, including two more by Nick Ruthsatz and two by Drew Parker Keller. A basket by Ben Heppler with 23 seconds left sealed the victory; and

WHEREAS, Nick Ruthsatz would finish with 25 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals and would be named MVP of the Sweet Sixteen. Senior Mark Schult would add 12 points and six rebounds, and Bo Schuh added 12 rebounds; and

WHEREAS, this honorable body congratulates the Covington Catholic Colonels upon their historic victory; commends the hard work of Coach Scott Ruthsatz and Assistant Coaches Tony Bacigalupo, Joe Fredrick, Brandon Elliott, Matt Stevens, Matthew Otte, and Steve Sorrell for their leadership and direction of these young men on and off the playing court; and applauds the entire Covington Catholic community for laying the groundwork that would help lead this team to a state championship;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate hereby honors the Covington Catholic High School basketball team upon winning the 2014 Boys' Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament, rightfully acknowledges the leadership of Coach Scott Ruthsatz and his staff, and wishes the senior class best of luck in all their future endeavors.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the Covington Catholic High School basketball team.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Christian McDaniel for delivery.
