A RESOLUTION honoring Makayla Epps upon her selection to the 2013 McDonald's All-American High School Basketball Team and being named 2013 Gatorade Kentucky Girls' Basketball Player of the Year.
WHEREAS, Makayla Epps, daughter of Anthony Epps and Angela Mattingly, is a standout basketball player for the Marion County High School Lady Knights; and
WHEREAS, Makayla Epps has led the Lady Knights Basketball team to incredible success, including four straight regional championships and a runner-up finish in the 2012 KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen, and has scored over 3,000 points in her storied prep career; and
WHEREAS, in 2013, Makayla Epps has led Marion County to an undefeated 39-0 season record and the 2013 KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen Championship, cementing the Lady Knights' spot as one of the greatest girls' basketball squads in Kentucky high school sports history; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of her tremendous achievements on the court, Makayla Epps was named to the 2013 McDonald's All-American High School Basketball Team, validating her status among the best players in the nation; and
WHEREAS, with her selection to the elite, 24-member McDonald's All-American Team, Makayla Epps, along with fellow Kentuckian Rebecca Greenwell of Owensboro, become just the second Kentuckians to be named to the team, joining Sara Hammond of Rockcastle County, who was a member of the 2011 team; and
WHEREAS, Makayla Epps has also been selected as the 2013 Gatorade Kentucky Girls' Basketball Player of the Year, and is the frontrunner to be named Kentucky's Miss Basketball for the year; and
WHEREAS, in addition to outstanding play on the court, the Gatorade Player of the Year award also recognizes academic achievement and character, and Epps, who has maintained a B average and has volunteered with American Red Cross blood donation drives, a literacy-outreach program, and as a peer tutor, is an outstanding example of a well-rounded athlete who gives back to her community; and
WHEREAS, Makayla Epps will continue her basketball odyssey next year as a member of the University of Kentucky Women's Basketball Team, following in the footsteps of her father, a member of Wildcat championship squads in the 1990s; and
WHEREAS, the achievements of Makayla Epps, and the honor and pride she has brought to her community, not only as an athlete, but as an outstanding student and individual of high character, should be publicly recognized and applauded;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
Section 1. The members of this Honorable Body, both individually and collectively, do hereby congratulate Makayla Epps upon her selection to the 2013 McDonald's All-American High School Basketball Team and being named 2013 Gatorade Kentucky Girls' Basketball Player of the Year, applaud her achievements both on and off the basketball court, and wish her good fortune in all future endeavors.
Section 2. The Clerk of the House of Representatives shall transmit a copy of this Resolution to Representative Terry Mills for presentation to Makayla Epps.
