A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Irene Borders Patton.

With deepest respect, we pay homage and tribute to the late Irene Borders Patton.

WHEREAS, mere words cannot express the power, beauty, and greatness of a mother's love; and

WHEREAS, Irene Borders Patton came into this world in 1916, a native of Ulysses, Kentucky, and traversed these earthly bounds on March 12, 1998, at the age of 81 after a lengthy battle with cancer; and

WHEREAS, Irene Borders Patton was the adored daughter of Roscoe and Nora Young Borders, and the loving wife of Ward Patton, her husband of 56 years, who preceded her in death; and

WHEREAS, Irene Borders Patton was the loving mother of Jo Ann Stanfill, Linda P. Erickson, and Governor Paul E. Patton, the "stars of her life," and the proud grandmother of eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren, the "superstars of her life"; and

WHEREAS, Irene Borders Patton was a working mother who helped establish and manage the Fallsburg Consolidated School lunchroom and worked there for nine years; and

WHEREAS, Irene Borders Patton was a longtime member of Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Ulysses, and attended the First Baptist Church in Louisa; and symbolic of her unfailing devotion to her faith, Irene Borders Patton devoted 23 years of her life to instilling moral and religious values into young children through her Sunday School teaching at Westmoreland Baptist Church in Huntington, West Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Irene Borders Patton was an involved citizen, as a distinguished member of the Louisa Chapter of the Eastern Star, the Lawrence County Democratic Women's Club, the United Democratic Women's Club of Lawrence County, and many more that are too numerous to mention here; and

WHEREAS, as sunset bears the promise of morning, and each raindrop the promise of blossom, so does departure from this life bring with it the promise of eternal life, and this thought should be a solace and comfort to the family and friends in this time of grief and loss; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Irene Borders Patton, a great woman rich in love for others, has left a void that will be difficult to fill, and she is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of bereavement and loss upon the passing of Irene Borders Patton, and extends to her family its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. The passion, dedication, and social consciousness that Irene Borders Patton brought to her community and to the Commonwealth of Kentucky will never be forgotten, and her influence will continue through her children.

Section 3. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Irene Borders Patton, who served as a symbol of inspiration, strength, and love to all the lives that she touched.

Section 4. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to Governor Paul E. Patton, Office of the Governor, 700 Capital Avenue, Suite 100, Frankfort, KY 40601.
