A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Dr. James Milton Smith.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Dr. James Milton Smith, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was born on November 19, 1918, a native son of the Commonwealth and a longtime resident of Frankfort, Kentucky, and traversed these earthly bounds on February 19, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith conducted his undergraduate studies at Morehead State and Western Kentucky State Colleges and completed his postdoctoral studies in dentistry the University of Louisville, Ohio State University, and the University of Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Army prior to his admission to dental school and he was commissioned a first lieutenant in the Army Dental Corps after dental school; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was later commissioned a captain and served as a Chief Dental Clinician and as an Assistant Dental Surgeon; and

WHEREAS, after his military service, Dr. James Milton Smith returned to his hometown of Louisa, Kentucky and started a dental practice and assisted with his father's farming and cattle business, George F. Smith and Son; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith practiced dentistry in the private sector for 55 years, 32 years in Louisa, Kentucky and 23 years in Frankfort, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was a member of Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, Eastern Kentucky and Bluegrass Dental Societies, Kentucky and American Dental Associations, and the International College of Dentists; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was appointed by Governors Bert T. Combs and Louie B. Nunn to the Kentucky Board of Dental Examiners, where he served as president during his two term tenure; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was extremely civic minded and was a dedicated past member of the Louisa and current member of the Frankfort Rotary Clubs; and he had perfect attendance for 32 years at the Frankfort club; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was recognized as a past Louisa Man of the Year, a Personality of the South, and as a Kentucky Colonel; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was a member of the Louisa and Frankfort United Methodist Churches; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was the devoted and loving husband for 62 years of Louise Grant Smith, who preceded him in death; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was the beloved father of Dr. James M. Smith, Jr., Mrs. Sharon Pauley, Mr. Sherrill G. Smith, and Professor Gary R. Smith; and

WHEREAS, Dr. James Milton Smith was the loving and proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren and the great-grandfather of 4 great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Dr. James Milton Smith has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Dr. James Milton Smith and extends to his family and friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. The Senate recognizes that Dr. James Milton Smith was loved and respected by his family, friends, and community and the members further acknowledge his service to this country as a member of the United States Army.

Section 3. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Dr. James Milton Smith.
