A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in loving memory and honor of Clarence "Duke" Madison.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Clarence "Duke" Madison.

WHEREAS, Clarence "Duke" Madison was born on January 30, 1923, a native of Anderson, Indiana, and long-time resident of Lexington, Kentucky, traversed these earthly bounds on May 13, 1997; and

WHEREAS, Clarence "Duke" Madison was the devoted husband of Anna Mae Gaines Madison; he was the adored father of Clarence Roger Madison II, and Mary Ann Taylor; and he was the proud grandfather of four grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Clarence "Duke" Madison will be remembered for his music genius, contributing his unique and emotional jazz music to the Lexington community for over 50 years; and in 1992, the Lexington Jazz Arts Foundation honored him, and as part of the event, a scholarship program at a University of Louisville jazz camp was founded in his name; and

WHEREAS, Clarence "Duke" Madison began playing the saxophone when he was eight years of age, performing at his elementary school and Sunday School; when he was sixteen, he played with the Hal McIntyre Band at a road show in Terre Haute, Indiana, and in the days when music was segregated, he performed with "sepia" bands; during World War II, he played with a prestigious military band, and after the war, he played in many cities throughout the country; he came to Kentucky in the 1940s to play with the old Jordan Embry Band in Richmond, and shortly thereafter, he made Lexington his home; and

WHEREAS, Clarence "Duke" Madison played the saxophone from his heart with soul-stirring effect, and his musical inspiration has been a contributing factor to the cultural enlightenment and enrichment of the citizens of the Lexington community and the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, all who knew and admired Clarence "Duke" Madison will grieve over their loss, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This honorable body does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Clarence "Duke" Madison, and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, Monday, May 19, 1997, it does so in loving memory and honor of Clarence "Duke" Madison.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Anna Mae Gaines Madison, 637 West Short Street, Lexington, Kentucky.
