Mission of Organization:Glenwood leads the state of Alabama in providing behavioral health care and educational services for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and severe emotional disturbances. Our services are provided in a least restrictive setting, through a continuum of care, with the highest respect for individuals and families served. In addition to direct care services, Glenwood provides consultation and training for mental health and educational professionals and promotes research in these specialized areas.

History of Organization:For more than 40 years, Glenwood has been Alabama’s expert in autism. In 1973, Glenwood was established by a group of devoted community leaders when there was no specific treatment and education in the area of children’s mental health. Glenwood continues to meet the tremendous demands in Alabama through educational, treatment and residential programs that help those served achieve their full potential and become productive members of society. Glenwood has developed more than 20 programs for children, teens, adults, and families affected by autism and mental illness with a continuum of services unique in Alabama and nationally. Trainings of teachers, healthcare professionals, and parents statewide ensure they have the knowledge and resources to better serve individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families.

No other Alabama agency has the scope of services that Glenwood provides to children, youth, adults, families and professionals affected by ASD and mental illness. Glenwood is unique because it welcomes all ages, disability levels, and insurance (accepting Medicaid and private pay). There are agencies in Birmingham that duplicate individual Glenwood services, but none provide Glenwood’s continuum of lifelong services. Many agencies and healthcare professionals across the country are referred to Glenwood for information and support, which Glenwood eagerly shares to benefit children and their families. Glenwood has assisted several Alabama nonprofits in their start-up and management and through ongoing efforts, has fostered a group of outstanding servant leaders who contribute to autism and behavioral health in our community and at the state level.

Population served

Through treatment, education, and residential programs, Glenwood targets low-resourced children, adolescents, and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental and behavioral health concerns across Alabama. Ninety-nine percent of those served have incomes less than $12,500 per individual and $17,900 per household.

The agency touches the lives of more than 9,500 people annually through direct educational and therapeutic services to1,505 individuals; referral and resource information to 3,927 people; and training of 3,642 education and healthcare professionals. The full continuum of care offered to both children and adults at our comprehensive center makes Glenwood unique nationally.

The vast majority of individuals are served on our Jefferson County campus and in community-based residences in the Greater Birmingham area. Glenwood is also expanding services in Huntsville and Montgomery.

In its 41-year existence, Glenwood has relied on a strong board and generous community in capital campaigns to start and grow. The Board is confident that the funds can be raised to grow again and meet the needs. Many services are paid for by the state, once infrastructure is built. Our annual fundraising is strong and well positioned to grow as well. Three annual fundraisers include: a gala put on by an outstanding Junior Board, which raised $217,000 in 2015; a memorial golf tournament raised $106,000; and after 40 years of selling pecans, we netted about $200,000 in 2015. This capital campaign will bring new donors who will be interested in supporting Glenwood annually as well.

State reimbursement, private pay, insurance reimbursement, andindividual annual contributionssupplement program costs. Philanthropic dollars raised are available to help with capital maintenance, and we are building endowment funds for future maintenance needs. In addition, we have enormous corporate volunteer support for maintenance of our campus buildings and landscape. Many of the corporations provide funds for supplies in addition to volunteer labor. In Fiscal Year 2014, we had 719 volunteers who gave 2,113 hours.

Why Invest in Glenwood?

“Glenwood gives a respite. Glenwood gives hope. Glenwood gives an opportunity to go to school and to live almost independently; to live in the community when that’s a good option and to live in a safe, protected, nurturing environment when it might not be an option. It provides opportunities for the children to enjoy some of the uplifting parts of being a child…that without Glenwood would not be available to them. If you just see what’s going on at Glenwood, you’ll be compelled to help in some way.” Robert Aland, Community Leader and Glenwood Board Member

Glenwood is unique nationally in offering a full continuum of care for both children and adults at a comprehensive center. Through treatment and education services, Glenwood targets low-resourced children, adolescents and adults with autism and other developmental and behavioral health concerns across Alabama.

It is important to invest in services that reduce costs while improving quality of life across the lifespan. The cost of allowing children, adolescents, and adults with ASD and other behavioral concerns to go untreated is high, both for individuals and for society.

ASD impacts the family. Parents often divorce, have financial issues, and depression. Addressing mental health care issues can help alleviate many of the problems that affect the quality of life for entire families.

As a society, people on the autism spectrum and their families are valuable members of our communities – with roles to play, dreams to achieve and contributions to make.

Delivering helpful services is often described as a “cost to society.” Yet, this phrasing neglects to acknowledge the nonfinancial social return on investment such services can produce. We know that helping people with autism and their families results in stronger communities.
