A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of the Reverend Walter Johnson, D.D.

WHEREAS, it seems appropriate from time to time for this honorable body to reflect upon the contributions of special Kentuckians who have enriched the lives of so many people; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Walter Johnson was born on March 20, 1929, a native of Taylor County, Kentucky, and he is the devoted husband of Barbara Fisher Johnson, the loving father of three children, and the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Walter Johnson graduated from Durham High School in 1946, after which time he attended West Kentucky Vocational School, and he was the second African-American to enroll in Campbellsville College where he served on the Christian Relations Council; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Walter Johnson accepted the call to the ministry of Christ in 1966, and he received his doctorate degree in divinity in 1993 from Simmons Bible College where he now serves as a Trustee; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Walter Johnson is an active and involved citizen and an esteemed member of the Taylor County community where he has been pastor of the Jacob Groves Baptist Church for the past twenty years; he was appointed by the mayor of Campbellsville to the Taylor County Human Rights Commission, and he played an integral role in the integration of Campbellsville and the Taylor County business community; he served as the first president of the Campbellsville Civic Club, he is a member of Greater Campbellsville United, he served as moderator of the Zion District Association, which consists of 23 churches for a five year term, and he is a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels; and

WHEREAS, the Reverend Walter Johnson's contributions to the people of Taylor County and to this great Commonwealth are beyond measure and will have lasting impact, and he has been an inspiration to all the lives he has touched;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby commend and applaud the Reverend Walter Johnson for his many contributions to this great Commonwealth and for spreading the Good Word to our citizens. We wish to him success in all future endeavors.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, February 20, 2002, it does so in honor of the Reverend Walter Johnson.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Dan Kelly for presentation to the Reverend Walter Johnson.
