A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of E.G. "Bummy" Hampton.

WHEREAS, for years, Hampton Meat Processing, established by E.G. "Bummy" Hampton, has been a well-known business in the city of Hopkinsville, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hampton, a native of Todd County, was born on December 27, 1917, the son of the late Frank Wade and Ellen Goens Hampton; and

WHEREAS, in his youth, Bummy Hampton moved to Pembroke, Kentucky, where he later undertook varied business endeavors in that community and in the adjacent city of Hopkinsville; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hampton's many business ventures included the building of Pembroke Elevator and Hampton Grain Warehouse. Mr. Hampton and a business partner established Hampton-Price Drug Store, and he built the Pembroke Clinic in 1953, successfully recruiting practicing physicians. Mr. Hampton built Hampton Grain Company in Hopkinsville in 1965; and

WHEREAS, in 1975, Bummy Hampton opened Hampton Meat Processing in Hopkinsville, with the company serving the food industry in southern Kentucky and parts of Tennessee since that time; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hampton sold his brand of "Uncle Bummy's Sausage," which he called a simple recipe that he was willing to share with anyone who asked for it; and

WHEREAS, Hampton Meat Processing also is known in the Hopkinsville area for processing deer meat and producing summer sausage made from venison; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hampton was active in church, government, and civic endeavors in the Pembroke community. He was a member of the Pembroke Christian Church, where he served on the board and on numerous committees. He served on the Pembroke City Commission for 12 years, was mayor for 15 years, and served as a city judge for eight years; and

WHEREAS, E.G. "Bummy" Hampton was a founder and charter member of the Pembroke Ruritan Club and was a member of the Elks Lodge, for which he served as an exalted leader for two terms; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hampton, who once said he received his unusual nickname from his sisters but did not know why, was described by his employees as a "caring and giving" person who quietly contributed to others; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hampton is survived by his wife, Annie Hampton, Pembroke; a son, Ernie Hampton, Hopkinsville; a daughter, Priscilla Hampton Tester, Birmingham, Alabama; a step-daughter, Darlene Matz, Port St. Lucie, Florida; a stepson, Bobby Perdue, Dover, Tennessee; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death in 1984 by his first wife, Erlene Harned Hampton; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Hampton departed this earthly life at his home in Pembroke on February 10, 2012, and an entire community joins his family and friends in celebrating his extraordinary life;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby express its most profound sense of sorrow to the family and friends of E.G. "Bummy" Hampton during the time of his passing.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of E.G. "Bummy" Hampton.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Joey Pendleton for delivery to the family.
