In the current school year, Tualatin High School will be completing the design of its experiment apparatus for the DIME program. <SOME MENTION OF OPTIONAL CORPORATE OR OTHER ASSISTANCE TO THE DIME TEAM CAN GO HERE>

The requests of this grant will cover the experiment shipping, travel, motel, and per-diem expenses involved in traveling to NASA Glenn to participate in the DIME Drop Days. This will enable the Tualatin High School DIME team to continue the educational DIME experience.

PROPOSAL OBJECTIVES

This is a proposal which requests funding for the NASA Glenn Dropping In a Microgravity Environment (DIME) competition for the 2003/2004 school year. The teams selected through the DIME proposal evaluation process will travel to NASA Glenn for the three-day DIME Drop Days during which the teams' experiments will be operated in the NASA Glenn 2.2 Second Drop Tower.

The DIME competition combines science and technology in a teamwork oriented project to conceive an experiment, develop the design, construct the experiment apparatus, and operate the experiment in the NASA Glenn 2.2 Second Drop Tower. The planning and execution of this project will develop the technical and academic skills necessary for these students to attain scientific and/or engineering careers.

The objectives of the Tualatin High School IB Program are as follows:

1. To provide students a rigorous curriculum in science and mathematics on a honors level so that students are prepared to succeed in future college course work in these areas.

2. To assist students in making career decisions in the areas of science, mathematics, engineering, and technology.

3. To provide students with state of the art facilities in which to implement science and mathematics curriculum.

The objectives of the Tualatin High School DIME team:

1. To expose students to professional engineers and technicians and the environment in which they work.

2. To provide an opportunity for students to participate in the scientific process in a meaningful way.

3. To provide an opportunity for students to participate in the engineering process in a meaningful way.

4. To demonstrate applications of High School Science and Mathematics concepts to actual science and engineering processes.

5. To work on a task oriented team effectively and efficiently.

Along with those goals and objectives, the proposed educational grant will address programmatic goals of the entire school.

1. Student development <COMPLETE THIS AS APPROPRIATE AND APPLICABLE>

• Improvement in student academic achievement

• Improvement in student attendance

• Reduce student drop-out rate

• Facilitate educated decisions regarding careers in science, engineering, and technology

2. Staff development <COMPLETE THIS AS APPROPRIATE AND APPLICABLE>

• Team building

• Curriculum enhancement and delivery

• Assist in attending educational workshop opportunities

3. Continue to enhance Tualatin High School internal/external image

• Publicize the Tualatin High School participation in the NASA Glenn DIME program

• Increase parental involvement in classroom and support activities
