SECTION 16450

GROUNDING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1WORK INCLUDED

A.POWER SYSTEM GROUNDING.

B.COMMUNICATION SYSTEM GROUNDING.

1.2TESTS

A.MEASURE ground grid resistance with earth test meter and install additional ground rods and conductors as required until resistance to ground complies with Code requirements.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1POWER SYSTEM GROUNDING

A.PROVIDE APPROVED GROUNDING of secondary alternating current system per NEC.

B.GROUND AND BOND service entrance raceways, cabinets, equipment, feeder raceways and feeder or distribution panels or switchboards.

C.GROUND AND BOND other metallic raceways, cabinets, motors, and equipment required by NEC.

D.BOND GROUNDING system to interior water (cold) piping system and point of connection shall be as near the point of entrance of water feeder to building, as possible.

E.GROUNDING ELECTRODES shall be as required by NEC and as indicated on the Drawings.

16450 - 1 LK 00000

F.DO NOT shunt or wire around dielectric unions placed in water pipes for electrolytic purposes. In case of an insulated water service, the aim is for a completely grounded interior system bonded to electrical raceways and system.

G.BONDING/GROUNDING ATTACHMENTS shall be made to conduits by means of phenolic or plastic throat, malleable iron, cadmium plated ground bushings full equal to T & B 3802 series. Grounding locknuts may be used for additional bonding, but will not be acceptable in lieu of ground bushings.

H.GROUNDING/BONDING CONDUCTORS shall be sized as indicated but in no case less than minimum NEC requirements. They shall be of soft annealed copper and shall be stranded when larger than No. 10, unless noted otherwise. They may be bare except where dangerously close to live parts, but where insulated they shall have a green color jacket or finish. When metallic conduit is used as conductor, connections shall be made tight.

I.WHEN PLASTIC CONDUIT IS USED, an extra ground wire shall be provided on each run.

J.LUGS AND FITTINGS: Grounding shall be UL approved solderless.

2.2COMMUNICATION GROUNDING

A.TELEPHONE:

1.PROVIDE one No. 2 THW to telephone service conduit.

2.PROVIDE one No. 6 THW to conduits terminating at backboard.

3.All communications grounding conductors shall terminate at the main service grounding bus.

2.3ISOLATED GROUNDS

A.INSTALL ISOLATED GROUNDING system as shown on the Drawings with insulated grounding conductors run from the isolated ground receptacle to the neutral terminal on a secondary transformer, or if there is no secondary transformer to the ground bus in the main distribution board. Splices and connections shall be made with ground buses in panelboards isolated from the system ground and the panel box. In no case shall the isolated ground system connect with the system grounding, except at the secondary transformer or at the main distribution board.

16450 - 1 LK 00000

B.IF PVC CONDUIT IS USED, a separate ground conductor must be pulled to bond the outlet box to the panel box or ground bus.
