  • To encourage 6th grade pupils to read books in English
  • To have pupils produce a collaborative piece of writing

How:

  • The teacher will divide the class into groups.
  • Each group will read a book for extensive reading (different books or the same book).
  • The schools will organize a contest: “The Nicest Poster”.We suggest that all pupils completing their project will receive a grade on their project as part of their term grade.
  • One winner from each school will be chosen.
  • The English teacher will photograph the winning poster (with a digital camera) and will email it (save on computer as jpg.) to the English Counselor, according to the areas listed below.
  • The poster must be sent to the English Counselor no later than

יום א', י"א אייר, תשע"א

(Sunday, May 15th, 2011)

Procedure for implementing the project in the classroom:

  1. Students will be informed and given rubrics for the poster project.
  1. The teacher will decide whether her class will readthe same book or different books for different groupsaccording to levels and /or interests. (No more than 4 pupils in a group)

2. The teacher will set aside a weekly time period for extensive reading within the classroom, known as SSR –sustained silent reading.

3. SSR should be conducted in the morning hour lessons with the teacher taking part in the reading experience. They should not be conducted towards the end of the day. Thus, the importance of reading for pleasure will be emphasized both by seeing the teacher as a role model, and by using the "important hours" of the day to read in.

4a. While reading, students will prepare sketches and rough drafts for the project.
