A NOTE TO REFEREES AND

SCHOLARSHIP NOMINATING COMMITTEES

Candidates for the Terry Fox scholarship must be: a) graduating secondary level students, or b) students currently studying toward a first university degree or diploma in a Canadian universityor college. Candidates must be Canadian citizens or have landed immigrant status and theymust not exceed 25 years of age.

In making our final selection of Terry Fox Humanitarian Award Program scholars, the SelectionCommittee will consider the extent to which candidates demonstrate the highest ideals andqualities of citizenship and humanitarian service while in pursuit of excellence in their academic, amateur sport, fitness, health and voluntary community service endeavours.

The Terry Fox Program Selection Committee will look for some definite marks of distinction withregard to the foregoing. The persistent pursuit of excellence in academic and athletic activities by candidates, while contributing to their community in voluntary service endeavours, particularly in the face of obstacles, is weighted heavily.“Obstacles” refer to physical disability, personal problems, social circumstances or any factorswhich call for courage, unselfishness and fortitude.

Please note:

- the Terry Fox scholarship is not primarily an athletic or disability award.

- although the academic record is important, it is not of paramount importance.

- financial need does not give a special claim to a scholarship.

The Committee will value critical estimates of candidates on each of the above points in so faras they are supported by referees’ personal experiences and knowledge of the candidates.References from close relatives or fellow students are not accepted. It should be noted that young people who may be the most creditable candidates may bereluctant to take initiative to apply. Application forms, complete with supporting documents (transcripts and supporting letters in (sealed envelopes) must be submitted by February 1 each year.

If more than one candidate is nominated, candidates should be listed in order of priority. All application material, as well as supporting letters and comments by local NominatingCommittees or Referees, will be treated as strictly confidential.

Yours truly,

W. Lorne Davies
