Greetings Third Grade Families! Please utilize this study guide with your child so that they might master the content. I suggest focusing on just a few each evening with the goal of memorizing all the answers by test day. Test day is most likely either the first Thursday or Friday of December, depending on how we are doing on this topic. As usual, there will be at least two open notes quizzes over the material as well. Please encourage your child to take good notes during class as the quizzes are easy opportunities for good grades.

Thanks, J.E.

A: 0 degrees Celsius; 100 degrees Celsius

  1. What temperature does water freeze using Fahrenheit? What temperature does it boil?

A: 32 degrees Fahrenheit; 212 degrees Fahrenheit

  1. How does thermal energy naturally move?

A: From hotter to cooler objects

  1. What happens to water particles as the temperature increases?

A: The particles move faster.

  1. What are some sources of heat?

A: The sun, friction, chemical reactions, fire, and electricity.

  1. How does heat from the sun get to the Earth?

A: Friction is a force between two objects

  1. Does friction produce heat?

A: Yes.

  1. How can you produce friction?

A: By rubbing your hands together.

  1. What is conduction?

A: Conduction is the movement of thermal energy between objects that touch each other.

  1. What is an example of conduction?

A: A pan on a stove cooking eggs.

  1. What is a conductor?

A: An object that thermal energy can move through easily.

  1. Can you name a good conductor?

A: Iron or Copper (metals)

  1. What is insulation?

A: Insulation is a material that is used to slow the movement of heat.

  1. Where can you find insulation?

A: In the walls of houses, in a thick jacket, in a cooler.

  1. What in an insulator?

A: An insulator is an object that doesn’t conduct heat well.

  1. What are some examples of insulators?

A: Wood, plastic, cloth
