FORAPERLE321:

A FLUORINATED ACRYLIC COPOLYMER FOR THE WATER- AND OIL-REPELLENT TREATMENT OF PAPER AND PAPERBOARD FOR FOOD PACKAGING

Fluorinated products have a particularly low surface energy, and can therefore be used to make paper and paperboard withstand penetration by oil, grease and solvents. Food packaging is one of the major applications for paper and paperboard which has been treated in this way. Most fluorinated compounds currently available are anionic compounds which can only be used in the wet end of paper production in the presence of a cationic retention aid. In addition, they are not water-repellent, so that the application process is further complicated by requering the addition of a sizing agent to impart water-repellency.

By contrast, FORAPERLE321 is a water-soluble cationic fluorinated acrylic copolymer. It can be used in the aqueous dispersion of the paper pulp without the need for a retention agent and ensures resistance to water as well as greasy substances.

This paper sets out the conditions for applying FORAPERLE321 both in the wet paper pulp and by size press treatmenton the paper surface. Typical applications for paper and paperboard treated with FORAPERLE321 are also described herein.

Krytox ® SR greases are formulated using patented soluble additives and are nitrite-free. Typical perfluoropolyether (PFPE) greases use solid sodium nitrite for antirust performance. This solid additive is mixed into the grease and held in place by the grease thickener. There have been no additives available for the PFPE base oil, because of its inertness and the insolubility of available additive chemistry.

The Krytox ® SR grease line offers lubricants for the corrugator industry with a soluble additive in the PFPE base oil. It cannot be washed away or left behind with the grease thickener. These new pat-ented additives enhance the performance of Krytox ® PFPE greases, improving their performance properties. Bearings run quieter and wear less because there are no solid additives to make noise and abrade metal surfaces. Less vibration and wear will extend bearing life and help equipment run longer between component replacements. The anticorrosion protection of the additive will reduce rusting and allow longer grease and bearing life. The extreme pressure properties of the additive protect bearings under high or even extreme loads.
