A Few Words from Fr. Ted –

For Auld Lang Syne

I have never cared for the traditional New Year’s song, Auld Lang Syne. Mostly, I think I didn’t understand it. I was primarily reacting to the first verse of the song without taking into account of the other verses and the chorus. All I heard was:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

It seemed a silly question to me; ‘Should old acquaintance be forgotten.” Obviously not! Why would we ever want to forget old friends and colleagues? The thought seemed insulting to me. It didn’t help that I had no real idea of what “auld lang syne” meant; nor was I yet mature enough to realize there are often things from the past which are best forgotten.

I now hear this song annually as a reminder that we should, in fact, recall the past and give thanks for both the good and the bad from it which have formed us into the people we have become. The song really calls us to toast to the past while looking hopefully to the future. That is what this time of year does. It reminds us of what has transpired over the last twelve months and it urges us to look forward to what will come. I think it is a time when we should look not just to the immediate past but to all that has happened to find significance in that past and to look to apply its lessons to the coming days.

When this kind of thinking is applied to a place like Christ the King, we have to remember those committed members of the parish whose faithfulness and labors have preserved this as a place where we can worship God, be nourished by Word and Sacrament and find fellowship with each other as followers of Jesus Christ. They founded a parish, built a building and supported its ministries so that we could have what we now hold dear.

It is now our turn to give of ourselves: our commitment, our faithfulness and our labor to assure the Christ the King will survive for future generations to be blessed as we have been. In November, three members of the parish participated in a workshop regarding Community Engagement; in December the Vestry and others, with guidance from a diocesan consultant, completed a Mutual Ministry Review in which we sought to identify what was going well and what could be improved upon. Both efforts are directed at helping us set goals for the coming year(s) that will prepare Christ the King for the future Jesus us calling us to. This is just a beginning, though, we need to continually ask why we are here and what can we do to assure our ministry’s future. This will be the task of all of us in the coming year. So let us look back with fondness and gratitude, and look forward with the resolve to continue the ministry of the Episcopal Church in Huntington and the surrounding area.

A WORD OF THANKS

My gratitude goes out to all who worked to make Advent and Christmas at Christ the King a special time. Although the weather conspired against us on Christmas Eve, the entire season was spiritually uplifting and fulfilling. Thanks go to Carmen Oswalt, Rose Holtrey and others who saw that the church and parish hall were decorated beautifully. Sue Nunemaker, the Music Committee, and the Adult and Youth Choirs provided wonderful music. The Altar Guild as always had everything prepared for each service. I want to especially recognize Linda Beatty for preparing the bulletins for multiple and varied services and Dixie Harrold who is always there before me and has everything organized. Thanks to all of you and to any I failed to mention. You make it easy for me.

I also would like to add a BIG thank you to all and everyone who assisted with "bluing, greening, or removing same" this holiday season. What a terrific crew it was. And I thought it was beautiful. Carmen Oswalt
