A grant to support some programs in this list of activities has been submitted to the East Central Regional Arts Council Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

All activities, classes, and events are open to all. They are designed to provide accommodations to be accessible.

Support Group Focus on Ability

Persons with a variety of health challenges from communities in East Central Minnesota come to the meetings. These folks share stories, listen, meet new friends and offer encouragement to one another. Meetings may include an educational or entertaining program, and always include refreshments and time for participants to visit. A donation of $1.00 per meeting is encouraged. Popcorn Pop and a Movie at North Branch Outlet Mall Theater

You may choose from the 7 movies at the theater.

1st Thursday of the month Longer Movie starts at 9:45 AM (doors open 9:15 AM)

Cost: Pay at theater - $5.00 Movie Only

$7.50 Movie, popcorn, pop and refills (must return your cup for a refill).

Movie lengths vary. Call ahead for specific start times. North Branch Theaters 651-674-2291. Longer movies have an earlier start time. So if you know you want a particular movie, please call ahead to verify when that one will start. Individuals accompanying participants must also pay. According to theater policy no R rated movies will be screened.

Let’s play “Life Stories”

At the December meeting of the We R Able Support Group members and guests are invited

to play the game “Life Stories.” The game provides opportunities to tell stories about

experiences growing up, visiting grandma and grandpa’s farm, things that happened in

school, and more. Refreshments are served after the meeting.

Dance from your chair, stretch your hands in the air

Co-sponsored by the Pine Center for the Arts

Learn dance moves especially designed for people with movement challenges, like Parkinson disease. Everything can be done in chairs, and opportunities to experience movement in a standing position will also be offered. Naratives go with the dancing, helping each participant to create a dance story as a group. No prior experience is necessary. Family members of people with movement challenges are welcome. The location is the Yoga Studio, 520 2nd Ave SE, Pine City, and trained dance instructor Cheryl Braddock of the Dance Place in Braham is the teacher. Six monthly sessions.

We are offering two bookmaking classes with artist Valorie Arrowsmith. Different books will be made at each session. You may sign up for one or two classes.

Bookmaking class I

Learn to make books that hold your special memories with book artist Valorie Arrowsmith. The location is the Chisago Lakes Middle School Art Room, Lindstrom. Attend one or both sessions, as new books will be featured each time.

Aquatics

We ‘R’ Able is offering the Aquatics class for enjoyment and an opportunity to have fun in the water and get some refreshing exercise. You may select classes that you would like to attend or the entire series. You could call this water aerobics, or water dancing, or water games, whatever the name, it’s a great workout that you can do according to your own level. Julie, the instructor, will keep things lively, and you’ll get to use balls, noodles, and even spend some time in the warm pool afterwards. A caregiver must accompany participants and be in the water. Plan to arrive at 6:30 p.m. and be in the water by 6:45 p.m.

Cost: $5 each pair, client and staff6:45 p.m.

Let’s go Bowling

Have fun with friends & get some good exercise too. Adaptations such as ramps and bumpers are available, so everyone can participate. Register early----space is limited! Volunteers are needed too.

Coffee time Concert

“Viktoria Borgessen” on the Swedish nyckelharpa

Join Cambridge resident storyteller Marilyn McGriff for an afternoon of comedy and music performed on an ancient Swedish stringed instrument called the nyckelharpa. She mirrors Viktor Borge with jokes and commentary, interspersed with music. The location is the Chisago County Senior/Community Center in North Branch and the We R Able support group members are the hosts. Coffee and refreshments provided.

Bake a Pie on National Pie Day, January 23

Kelly Appeldorn will teach pie making at the Pine City High School FACS room. You will make a Mini Mixed Berry pie using basic ingredients. Pies seem like a happy way to face a cold wintry day. Kelly is a Community Nutrition Educatorfor Pine County and works for the University of Minnesota Extension Simply Good Eating Program. She provides nutrition education all around the community and in her classes participants make food that is fun, healthy and easy.

Guitar Sampler

Seasoned and professional musician Troy Heling will offer beginning guitar lessons on four Tuesday evenings at the North Branch Middle School. Participants will learn the names of the strings, the first five frets, how to tune the guitar, and some basic chords and have an opportunity to practice as a group. Guitars will be provided, and will remain at the teaching site. Participants with their own guitars may bring them. Troy will use “open tuning” so that even on the first night each participant will be successful in playing a tune.

Personal Clay Tile Stories

Co-sponsored by Pine Center for the Arts, and Family Pathways Circle of Friends, who will provide social time and a snack.

Clay artist Barb Dreyer will teach participants how to impress their story into clay tiles. She will introduce textures that can be pressed into wet clay to show who you are and what your interests are. Location: Pine City High School Art Room.

St. Urho’s Day Concert

Enjoy a sandwich with friends and listen to Kip Peltoniemias he performs Finnish music to help celebrate St. Urho, who chased the grasshoppers out of Finland. Drawing and Painting Class

Have you ever wanted to paint a beautiful picture, but aren't sure where to start? In this class, you will learn a unique drawing and painting technique that will produce amazing results, regardless of your skill level. Sue Wehrenberg is the instructor. Former participants say that this is a relaxing and non-threatening atmosphere and that the classes are enjoyable and relaxing. This is a very popular class so register early. CD Flower and Spin Art

Seasoned craft teacher Del Gralish will help participants create two crafts that you can enjoy yourself or give as a gift. She will provide materials to make a CD flower that can be hung up outside, and also participants will create spin art, just like at the State Fair. The class is held at the Middle School art room in Lindstrom at 6:30 p.m. and lasts for 1.5 hours. Please register one week in advance.

Arts and Culture Field Trip to Gammelgården in Scandia

Tour of Swedish historic and cultural site, plus make some Swedish art with staff at the museum. Enjoy Swedish coffee time treats and have lunch at the site.

Coffee Time Concert with Pat Schonhardt

This singer songwriter from rural Braham has been in the music business for many years. He produces the “Music and Pie” concert series at the Siloa Lutheran Church in Maple Ridge Township. He participates in many performing groups including “Siloa Creek” a bluegrass band, “The Inglorious Hellcats” a rock and roll and rhythm and blues band, “Ogemabenez” and guitar and flute duo featuring Native American music. Pat is also a guitar teacher. The location is the Chisago County Senior/Community Center in North Branch and the We R Able support group are the hosts. Coffee and refreshments provided.

Listen to the rich baritone voice of Minneapolis folk performer Ross Sutter as he sings some Irish, Celtic, Scottish and Nordic songs.
