Work individually at your curriculum PC and carefully print your answers on this sheet.
How to use the traceroute command
Open a DOS window: Start | Programs | MS DOS Prompt
At the DOS Prompt, type
tracert name (where name is the domain name of the target host) or
tracert ipaddr (where ipaddr is the IP address of the target host)
Step 1 - Trace the route to a host at Las Positas College: lpc1.clpccd.cc.ca.us
Copy the entire resulting display here:
Step 2 - Trace the route to a host near Los Angeles: www.csu.net
How many hops were required to reach www.csu.net? _______________________
Step 3 - Trace the route to a host in Hayward: www.alameda-coe.k12.ca.us
How many hops were required to reach www.alameda-coe.k12.ca.us? _______________________
Step 4 - Explore the links at http://www.csu.net
· Examine the Maps, including the California Backbone Map and Northern California Region Map
Note that Chabot-Las Positas is connected to the big yellow dot in Sunnyvale, and from there to the yellow dot in Los Angeles over the orange 155 Mb/s backbone.
After looking at the maps and the traceroute in step 3, what is your hunch about why the route from Chabot to Alameda County Office of Education (just a few blocks away from Chabot) has so many hops?

· Check the 4Cnet Services and Technologies, including Bandwidth Utilization (find Chabot-Las Positas)
What was the Chabot-Las Positas peak bandwidth
today for Serial 1: 4CNet WAN Connection #2 ? _____________M bits / sec.
Step 5 - Trace the route to the Ohlone College webserver: www.ohlone.cc.ca.us
When the display shows: * * * Request timed out, press Control-C to stop the trace.
Your trace didn't reach this host because for security, it is configured to reject ICMP echo requests. Try pinging it!
However, it accepts regular TCP/IP traffic on port 80. Try pointing your browser at http://www.ohlone.cc.ca.us
(This is an example of how traceroute sometimes doesn't work as expected.)
