KEYNOTE SESSIONS

Morning Keynote: Today’s Workforce, Today’s Challenges, Today’s Opportunities

Managing human resources in today’s political, economic and generational climate requires more than just the “title” of a leader. Being a leader in today’s workplace requires a higher level of leadership skills and human resource awareness than ever before. It requires insight into the company’s goals and culture and knowledge of the internal and external labor market’s ability to meet those goals. Being a leader in the midst of today’s workforce challenges also requires managers to possess the ability to create opportunities out of adversity and to turn obstacles into building blocks. Session Objectives: This session will provide attendees with 1) an understanding of the evolution of today’s workforce, 2) insight into the challenges posed by the ever-changing demands for a skilled labor market (internal and external to the company), and 3) tools for turning adversity into opportunity.

Afternoon Keynote: Bridging the Generational Gap in the Workplace

There’s a generational battle going on in your workplace that resembles a good ole East Coast vs. West Coast beef. The battle is over values, work styles, benefits, communication channels and more. Intergenerational conflict brews in nearly every organization. It affects morale, productivity, retention and development opportunities. Over the next several years, we will experience the departing Baby Boomer generation, the rising leadership of Gen Y’s and the assimilation of tech-savvy Millennials into the workplace. Rather than focus on the differences between the behaviors of generations and judging which one is better, this session will focus on ways leaders can bridge the gap and create harmony in the workplace by focusing on the similarities and common interest.

CONCURRENT SESSIONS

Working Together as a Team

While we aren’t always able to choose teammates based on compatibility and congeniality, we can choose how we interact with others to make any situation more successful. In this session, participants will consider the perspectives and expectations that they bring to their teams, how those expectations and perspectives affect their happiness and performance and participants will discuss specific attitudes and skills for dealing with their more difficult peers.

Employment Law Legal Update

Participants in this session will receive a general legal update which will include new Federal and Alabama state laws, rules, and regulations. The session will also include discussions regarding the importance of documentation and issues related to social media and the workplace.

Leaders Bringing Out the Best in Others

The most powerful and least recognized form of leadership is Leading from the Middle – bringing out the best in others, so that they can realize and step into their own potential to create change. The degree to which you lead your organization or team to success lies in your hands. Your ability to lead both yourself and others will enhance the quality of your work as well as your life. The quality of your leadership not only determines your future, it determines the future of your organization and the lives of all those who follow you. This session will provide participants with 12 Most Timeless Principles for Bringing out the Best in Others. When we seek to bring out the best in others you bring out the best in ourselves.

Generational Workforce Challenges

We are certainly aware that Baby Boomers and Generation X’ers are carrying a wealth of experiential knowledge and members of the Millennial Generation are entering the work force full of expectations, new ideas and texting all the way. The big question is, “What do you DO about it and how is it an advantage not a problem?” How do you connect to an employee who is 20, maybe even 30 years younger or older? How do you find common ground with someone with a completely different world view? How do you keep up with your workload and work on communication and team cohesiveness? In a lively, interactive process, session participants will engage in a high energy dialogue to determine why there is conflict among the different generations, what motivates employees in each generation and how each generation must be engaged to contribute its best.

Warning Signs of Violence in the Workplace

Workplace violence is always a concern for front-line managers and supervisors since they are typically the bearers of bad news or blamed for disappointments. This session will provide participants with a discussion of workplace violence, the warning signs to look for and preventive measures that can be taken to prevent workplace violence. Participants will learn the importance of thorough pre-employment screening in order to identify liabilities. Participants will also be instructed on how to monitor employees in order to spot early warning signs of violence. Participants will also learn how to put proper security measures in place to minimize the risks of violence in the workplace.

“It’s All Your Fault!" How High Conflict Personalities Can Wreck the Workplace and What You Can Do About it.

High conflict personality types exist in large numbers throughout society. Many have actual personality disorders or maladaptive personality traits. They cause disruption in the workplace due to their propensity for persuasion… they attract negative advocates who enable them. Based on the books of Bill Eddy, this session will focus on recognizing HCPs, understanding them and will include tips on how to work with them because many HCPs bring value to the workplace if they are managed effectively. The session will bring value to the participant through the employee relations section of the body of knowledge.

Workforce Trends: Where We Are and Where We're Going

Hiring and retaining skilled employees can be a challenge in today’s labor market. The “college push” of the past decade has left many new job seekers with a college degree - without the hands-on technical skills needed to perform the high demand jobs in Alabama. Add to that the ever-changing world of technology and some employers are finding that their current employees cannot keep up with the technology demands of their current jobs. So how does one survive in this changing landscape? Bobby Jon Drinkard, program manager with AIDT, and past contestant on CBS reality TV show, SURVIVOR, will share his knowledge of today’s workforce trends and resources to help managers survive in today’s challenging labor market This session will assist participants in knowing where to find skilled labor, how to upgrade the skills of their current labor force, and how to target upcoming high school and college students so that they are informed about the needed KSA’s to work in their particular industry.

Ready, Aim, Fire: Writing Performance Goals That Hit the Target

What gets measured gets done! And measuring employee, team, department and even organizational performance is difficult to do well. Performance goals are based on the end results, not how we get to that end result (i.e., the activities). Writing effective performance goals can motivate employees and is vital to the success of a division, department, and ultimately an organization. This presentation will primarily focus on writing effective performance goals for employees. It will also address the importance of employee performance goals, how to cascade the goals through an organization, and executing for success.

When Drug Tests Aren't Positive, But You're Positive They Should Be…

According to a study conducted by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the University of Maryland’s Center for Substance Abuse Research, people who undergo routine drug screenings in the workplace could be using synthetic marijuana without getting caught. This is an alarming finding for companies! This session will focus on current drug trends and composition, including synthetic marijuana, and how you can identify the chemicals and users. This session will also examine societal acceptance vs. corporate acceptance and the realistic expectations for future generations. At the end of this session, participants should be able to 1) demonstrate a knowledge of current drugs on the streets, 2) identify dangers and side effects of the most common street drug, including synthetic drugs, 3) identify synthetic chemicals and their users and, 4) examine societal acceptance vs. corporate acceptance and realistic expectations for future generations.
