Chapter 17 Lesson Review
Lesson 1
1. Vietcong tactics of ambush, guerrilla tactics, blending in with civilians
2. This authorized the president to “take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.” Johnson sent U.S. aircraft to bomb North Vietnam.
3. The Ho Chi Minh trail wound through Cambodia and Laos, bypassing the border between North and South Vietnam. North Vietnam provided the Vietcong with arms and supplies via the Trail’s network of jungle paths.
Lesson 2
4. College students could often defer military service until after graduation. Young people from working-class families unable to afford college were more likely to be drafted. This led to a disproportionate number of working-class and minority youths being sent to combat.
5. Johnson decided not to seek another term as president because of the turmoil of the war. Nixon won the election in part because he promised to bring an end to the Vietnam War.
Lesson 3
6. No; soon after the United States withdrew its troops, North Vietnam invaded and captured the capital of South Vietnam.
7. Newspapers wanted to publish documents about conducting the war that the government did not want the public to read. After a court ruling protecting the First Amendment, The New York Times and the Washington Post were allowed to publish the Pentagon Papers.
