AP Human Geography is a rigorous, full year, college-level course. The focus is on preparing students to take the AP exam in May for college credit.Students should have a Ba average in History and English and will be nominated by their US History teacher. The course will include core concepts of Human geography such as culture, language, economics and political geography. Students will be required to read and analyze articles and view videos with containing sensitive subject matter.

World Geography 77115 Sem

Geography is the study of earth; its people, places and cultures. It is a half year class coving basic geographic concepts such as map skills, graphing, climates and current issues. Regions of the world such as Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Africa and other news worthy topics will be covered.

Creative Writing 52133 9 Sem

Creative Writing will explore different genres of writing with the main goal of inspiring amazing ideas and constructing original pieces. Students will use their imagination and experiment with multiple writing techniques. Students will work with multiple genres and appropriate literary devices to make something new and different, blending real-world experiences and memories to form imaginative pieces.

MATH

Secondary Math 1 62125 9 Year

The purpose of Secondary Mathematics I is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Students will use properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied.

The physical education program develops lifetime attitudes through participation in physical activity and healthy lifestyles. It is a sequence of experiences in a number of activities that challenge all ability levels. It focuses on social interactions and cognitive learning, as well as skill development, with progressive levels of difficulty. It continues to teach students the need to

incorporate principles of fitness into their daily lives.

The Earth Systems class integrates all the sciences while placing an emphasis on environmental awareness. Students will learn about the Earth through units on the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geology, biology and energy systems. Interrelationships between these systems are explored and the influence of people and technological advancements are discussed. Students learn using a variety of lectures/worksheets, discussions, debates, presentations, videos and mini-labs/demonstrations. There is a fee for this class

Physics is thestudy of force, gravity, work, motion, electricity, energy, andtheir applicationto mechanical, fluid, electrical, and thermal systems. GENERAL ELECTIVE

This is a beginning keyboarding course. Students will learn keyboarding skills

on the computer through the touch system. The following skills will be taught in the course, alphabetic and numeric keys, speed and accuracy development, formatting of letters and reports, and computer terminology. This course is not offered at the high school level.

Prerequisite: Keyboarding 1 or 35 GWAM

This course is designed to increase student keyboarding skill through practice drills, and also reinforcement of correct techniques. Students will learn how to use Word and Excel software to create, format, and edit personal and business documents.

Agricultural Science I 72227 9 Year

Students will develop knowledge and skills that will provide a foundation for courses in animal science, plant science, horticulture, natural resources, agricultural systems, and technology, or Agricultural Science II. Topics covered will be basic animal, plant, and soil science; natural resources; food science technology; agribusiness; personal and leadership development; and agricultural career awareness. Though this course, students will develop agricultural literacy.

COMPUTER

This course is designed for the students that are proficient at using a computer. Students will learn about operating systems, word processing, spreadsheets, internet, e-mail, and PowerPoint slide show presentations. This is a required class for high school graduation but is offered at junior high for those students who are competent and ready for the next step. If you are very effective at the computer and want to earn a required high school class credit while in junior high, this class is for you.

CAREER TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION (CTE)

Food & Nutrition I 43210 9 Sem

The course is designed for students who are interested in understanding the principles of nutrition and in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Attention will be given to personal health and well-being and the selection and preparation of food. Fee is required.

Teen Living 43130 9 Sem

This course helps students understand and cope with personal, family, and social challenges. Emphasis is placed on communication, decision-making skills, and building stable relationships with family and peers. The course enables students to implement positives coping mechanisms and promotes and understanding of self. Critical issues which impact teenagers include: self-concept, family and peer relationships, abuse, loss, dating, and teenage pregnancy are discussed stressing positive alternatives. Emphasis is placed on students taking personal responsibility for life.

Continuation of the principles covered in Tech Ed (Metals), with more emphasis on detail and instilling techniques useful in the trade field. Students will design and construct a project of their own using the techniques learned in Tech Ed. These skills will be reviewed and welding and foundry will be studied in greater detail. Shop safety will again be reviewed. There is a fee for this class.

Intro to Construction Technology 84125 9 Sem

Continuation of the principles covered in Tech Ed (Woods), with more emphasis on detail and instilling techniques useful in the trade field. We will use some small projects to expand skills, then students will design and construct a project. Knowledge of power tools and shop safety will be stressed. There is a fee for this class.

Intro to Transportation and Energy 84140 9 Sem

An introductory technology education program that introduces basic skills,

Applications, and impacts related to the world of transportation technology with a special emphasis given to role energy plays in that world. The different

Transport systems will be explored along with energy sources used by these systems. Environmental and social impacts will be addressed along with alternative energy sources and their impacts. Understanding the relationship between transportation technology, energy and other technological systems is essential. By utilizing problem-solving skills in a laboratory environment, students will develop skills and attitudes that impact and expand occupational opportunities. There is a fee for this class.

This course will teach students to create, store, and record information using four areas: Drafting, Electronics, Audio-Visual, and Graphics. There will be classroom activities involving computers, shop projects, and hands on activities such as graphic arts, silk screening, engraving, and 3-D printing. There is a fee for this class.

FINE ARTS

This is an introductory visual art class, with an emphasis on studio production. We will use a variety of art mediums while we learn about the 7 art elements. There is a fee for this class

Prerequisite: Passing grade in Art A

This course will enhance the experience of Art 1. There is a continuing emphasis on the studio production and application of the art elements and principles are used to assist students to express themselves through creation of works of art. There is a fee for this class.

Art C 32102 9 Sem

Prerequisite: Passing grade in Art B

This course is an enhanced experience in artistic issues with an emphasis on studio production. We will explore both traditional and non-traditional media, including collage, printmaking, ceramics and painting. Students are working toward a personal style, while developing the art elements and principles.

An introductory course which will cover some basic performing skills. Students will work on such things as pantomime, storytelling, and acting. The focus will be improving acting skills, while at the same time, helping students feel more at ease when performing in front of others. It is hoped that students will leave the class with more self-confidence and a basic understanding of theatre. Fee required.

Prerequisite: Drama I

This course builds on the skills acquired in Drama I. Study will include advanced vocal work, characterization, movement, American Musical Theater, and advanced scene work. The focus will be helping the actor portray a believable character on stage. Fee required.

Prerequisite: Drama II and teacher signature required for this class.

This course continues to build on the skills acquired in Drama 2. The study will include stage craft, advanced vocal and characterization work, movement, and appreciation of all forms of theater. The focus of the class will be to help the students refine their acting skills and to gain a greater appreciation for the

performing arts. There is a fee for this class.

Advanced Band 32152 8,9 Year

Prerequisite: Teacher’s approval

This course provides opportunities for advancement and refinement of musical skills gained in previous band classes. Emphasis is placed on musicality, individual and ensemble performance skills, recognition of musical styles and historic periods, and quality band literature. Home practice and concert attendance are required. Students must have own instrument unless renting from the school. . There is a fee for this class.

Beginning Guitar 32175 8,9 Sem

This course offers fundamental guitar techniques for beginning players. Emphasis will be placed on music reading skills, melody playing, and chord playing. Students will learn various styles of guitar playing. Solo and group performance will be required in class. Students must provide their own acoustic guitar. No amplifiers will be allowed in class. Concert attendance required. . There is a fee for this class.

Beginning Piano 32431 8, 9 Sem

This class is for those interested in learning how to play simple songs on the piano. Students will also learn the five elements of music - sound, harmony, rhythm, melody and form. Students should NOT have any piano experience for this class. There is a fee for this class.

Percussion Ensemble 32157 7,8,9 Year

This course is open to students interested in learning to play percussion instruments as well as to students who have already been playing percussion before. Home practice and attendance at concerts is required. Percussion kits are available through rent to own programs at local music stores. There is a fee for this class.

Advanced Orchestra 32171 8,9 Year

Prerequisite: Teacher’s approval

This course is open to all students who have successfully completed beginning orchestra, or demonstrate mastery of basic skills. Students learn to play in positions and with vibrato, and learn advanced rhythms and bowing techniques. Solos and small ensembles develop independence. Concert repertoire includes challenging literature in a variety of styles. Concert attendance required. The Music Department has a limited number of rental instruments available. .
